２１世紀も既に２５年が経過した今日、世界の超大国がこんな厚かましい侵略事件を起こすと誰が想像したであろうか？一昔前には未熟だった人類は国家エゴから他国を盛んに侵略し合ったものだ。日本も海を渡り満州から中国本土へ強欲な侵攻をしたのだった。あげくの果てには世界中が乱戦となり、悲惨な世界大戦が二度も起こったのだ。何と！８０００万人もの人々が死亡して、この世界大戦争がやっと終わったのが１９４５年。もう８０年前のことになる。誰もが戦争はもうコリゴリだった。それ以降、人類は国家エゴイズムむき出しの犯罪的な他国侵略を心　理的、倫理的に恥ずべき事と思うようになっていたはずである。

　一つの事実を思い出そう。今、世界中には国境の枠を超えて、ロシアの行為を不正義と見る市民が事実として何億、何十億と存在するではないか！この数十年の情報革命は世界を、地球を狭く、一体化して来たのではなかったか？我々一人一人はある国の国民であると同時に、もはや地球市民であり、世界市民と言ってもいいぐらいの意識の変革を体感しつつあると言ってもよいだろう。

　温暖化等の問題群が露わになり、地球は今世紀末まで持たないかもしれない。そんな不気味さが襲っている今日、もはやこの我々皆の星の球面上のある地域で戦争を起こし、殺し合っている場合ではないのだ。　

　 我々の属する一つ一つの国家はそれぞれが複雑な事情も抱え、国家間の思惑などの影響も受けて、その大きな身体を機敏に動かせないのが実態だが、一人一人の市民はやろうと思えば、国家の枠を超え国境を超えて地球市民、世界市民としての思いと声を広く発することができる時代となった。その何億、何十億の声を集め、ロシアとプーチン氏を諭し、ウクライナへの連帯の声を挙げようではないか！

　今回の戦争を、ウクライナが敗北し、ロシアがもくろむ勝利の形で終る事を、理想を目指して成長してきた世界は決して許してはならない。

Yet now, 80 years later, Russia has suddenly invaded its neighbor Ukraine, starting a reckless war. It’s as if we’ve regressed to the 20th century.

 

Due in part to the lingering existence of the absurd “veto power,” no nation has been able to stop this outrageous behavior. Are we powerless citizens living in such nations doomed to merely watch as Ukraine is trampled by a major power, remaining helpless spectators? Absolutely not.

 

We, the people, increasingly connected online with a growing sense of global and planetary citizenship, can transcend national borders. Our voices, numbering in the hundreds of millions or even billions, can form a powerful appeal and become a force to support Ukraine. This is the path we propose.

Who would have imagined that in the 21st century, after 25 years, a global superpower would shamelessly initiate such an act of invasion? In the not-so-distant past, humanity—still immature—frequently invaded others driven by national ego. Japan, too, crossed the sea to aggressively invade Manchuria and mainland China. Ultimately, the world plunged into chaos and experienced two horrific world wars.

 

Unbelievably, 80 million people perished before the war ended in 1945—80 years ago. Humanity had come to believe that such egotistical acts of invasion were morally and psychologically disgraceful.

 

Yet, three years ago, Russia launched a war of aggression against Ukraine—an act that tramples over this healthy moral awareness.

 

For years, Russia has shocked us with events reported by the media. For example, when a Russian submarine sank in the Arctic Ocean, and families of the crew demanded explanations, a mother pressing for answers was forcibly removed—likely sedated with an injection. More recently, Putin’s political opponent Navalny was imprisoned and later died mysteriously in a frigid penal colony.

 

While I feel sorry for those born and living in Russia, I can’t help but think, “I’m glad I wasn’t born there.” Once a nation that gave us the literary genius of Tolstoy, Russia now appears to be entirely under the authoritarian grip of Putin.

 

This invasion—an attempt to strip away the sovereignty of an independent nation—is a crime against history, something utterly unthinkable in the modern 21st century. Shocking reports tell us that children have been forcibly taken from their parents and “Russified” through indoctrination.

 

And yet, shamefully, the international community has been unable to stop these blatant criminal acts.

 

So what can be done if no nation can stop such state-level crimes?

 

Let us remember a truth: today, there are hundreds of millions—if not billions—of citizens around the world who see Russia’s actions for the injustice they are.

 

The information revolution of the past few decades has made the world smaller, more interconnected. Each of us is no longer just a citizen of our own country—we are global citizens, citizens of the Earth.

 

Climate change and other global crises threaten the very survival of our planet by the end of this century. Now is not the time for war or bloodshed anywhere on this fragile sphere.

 

While individual nations may be bound by complex interests and slow-moving bureaucracies, individual citizens can now raise their voices as global citizens, transcending borders.

 

Let us raise those voices—millions, tens of millions—against Putin’s aggression, and in solidarity with Ukraine. The world, which has aspired toward justice, must not allow this war to end in a Russian “victory” and Ukrainian defeat.
