2026年9月18日、のとじま水族館でジンベエザメの展示が再開されました。

展示されたのは、同年8月27日に石川県志賀町百浦の定置網に入った、全長約4.5メートルの雄です。

広い海を泳いでいた野生のジンベエザメは、水族館の水槽へ搬入され、愛称募集や記念イベント、クイズラリーなどの対象になっています。

しかし、この展示再開に至るまでには、3頭の死がありました。

・2024年1月
能登半島地震後の水漏れや設備停止によって飼育環境が悪化し、飼育されていたジンベエザメ2頭が死亡

・2024年10月
志賀町沖の定置網に入った雌の「モモ」を水槽へ搬入し、展示を開始

・2026年1月15日
「モモ」が飼育中に死亡。公表時点では死因を調査中

・2026年9月
新たに定置網に入った野生個体を水槽へ搬入し、展示を再開

地震は予測や回避が難しい災害であり、危機的な状況の中で動物を守ろうとした職員の努力を否定するものではありません。

また、能登の復興を願う気持ちは、私たちも同じです。

しかし、復興や集客、教育、研究、人に感動を与えることを理由に、野生動物を自然界から水槽へ移し、展示の対象にすることまで正当化されるのでしょうか。

 

ジンベエザメは、世界最大の魚類です。

温帯から熱帯の広い海域に生息し、個体によっては非常に長い距離を移動する、高度に回遊性のある野生動物です。国際自然保護連合の評価では「絶滅危惧」に分類されています。

自然界では広い海を移動する動物にとって、どれほど大きな水槽であっても、海の代わりにはなりません。

設備を強化し、飼育環境を改善することは必要です。

しかし、人工設備に生命を依存させ、移動や行動の自由を奪うこと自体の是非は、設備改善だけでは解消されません。

水族館から海へ戻されたジンベエザメには、複数の前例があります。

沖縄美ら海水族館では、15年間飼育された個体が2015年に放流され、その後の行動が記録されました。

海遊館でも、飼育していた個体を研究施設へ移し、健康状態を確認したうえで海へ放流しています。

もちろん、放流は無条件に行えばよいものではありません。

現在の個体の健康状態、飼育期間、餌への依存、移送方法、放流する海域や季節、放流後の追跡などを、専門家が慎重に検討する必要があります。

だからこそ、水族館の内部だけで判断するのではなく、ジンベエザメの生態、野生動物の獣医療、動物福祉、放流後の追跡に詳しい独立した専門家を交え、放流可能性を公開のもとで検討してほしいと考えます。

1．現在飼育されているジンベエザメについて、利害関係のない外部専門家を含む検討体制を設け、健康状態と放流可能性を速やかに評価してください。

2．安全に放流できると判断された場合は、馴致、移送、放流後の追跡を含む計画を立て、できる限り早く自然の海へ戻してください。

3．現時点で放流が個体に重大な危険をもたらすと判断される場合は、その根拠と評価結果を公表し、放流が可能になる条件を継続的に検討してください。

4．今後、展示を継続するために定置網へ入ったジンベエザメを新たに搬入しないでください。

5．現在の個体の放流または飼育終了をもって、のとじま水族館でのジンベエザメの生体展示を終了してください。

6．映像、模型、野外調査、海洋保全活動など、野生個体を水槽へ収容しない教育・研究・復興のあり方へ移行してください。

 

この署名は、水族館の職員個人を責めるためのものではありません。

また、これまで亡くなった個体の死を、すべて同じ原因で説明するものでもありません。

問いかけたいのは、個々の飼育技術だけではなく、野生動物を人間の娯楽や集客のために水槽へ移し、いなくなれば別の個体を迎える展示のあり方そのものです。

「人気者」や「復興のシンボル」と呼ばれる前に、その個体には、その個体自身の生があります。

今回の個体が安全に海へ戻れる可能性を真剣に検討すること。

そして、これ以上新たなジンベエザメを水槽へ運ばないこと。

のとじま水族館と石川県が、野生動物を収容しない新しい教育と復興の形を示すことを願い、署名への賛同をお願いします。

Stop Bringing Wild Whale Sharks into Tanks
Assess Whether the Whale Shark Can Be Safely Released and End the Whale Shark Exhibit at Notojima Aquarium

On September 18, 2026, Notojima Aquarium resumed its whale shark exhibit.

The shark now on display is a male approximately 4.5 metres long. He entered a fixed fishing net off Momoura in Shika, Ishikawa Prefecture, on August 27, 2026, and was subsequently transferred to the aquarium.

A wild whale shark that had been swimming in the open sea is now being kept in a tank and used as the focus of naming activities, commemorative events and promotional programmes.

This latest exhibit follows the deaths of three whale sharks.

 

• January 2024:
  Two whale sharks kept at the aquarium died after the Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Water leakage and equipment failures caused their captive environment to deteriorate.
• October 2024:
  A female whale shark named Momo, who had entered another fixed fishing net, was transferred to the aquarium and placed on display.
• January 15, 2026:
  Momo died while in captivity. At the time of the official announcement, the cause of death was still under investigation.
• September 2026:
  Another wild whale shark was transferred from a fixed net to the aquarium, and the exhibit was reopened.

The earthquake was an extraordinary disaster. This petition does not deny the efforts made by aquarium staff to protect the animals under extremely difficult circumstances.

We also share the hope for Noto’s recovery.

However, recovery, tourism, education, research and human enjoyment do not automatically justify removing a wild animal from the sea and confining him for display.

Whale sharks are the world’s largest fish. They are highly migratory animals that travel through vast areas of the ocean, and some individuals have been recorded travelling thousands of kilometres. The species is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

No matter how large an aquarium tank may be, it cannot replace the open ocean.

Improving equipment and husbandry is important. But better equipment alone cannot resolve the underlying ethical question: whether humans should make the life of a wide-ranging wild animal dependent on an artificial facility and deprive that animal of the freedom to move through its natural habitat.

Release must not be carried out without careful preparation.

The health of the current shark, the length of time spent in captivity, feeding dependency, transport arrangements, the release location and season, and post-release monitoring must all be assessed by qualified specialists.

There are precedents for releasing whale sharks held by aquariums. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium released a whale shark in 2015 after 15 years in captivity and monitored the animal’s movements. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan has also transferred a captive whale shark for a health assessment before releasing him into the Pacific Ocean.

These examples do not prove that release is automatically safe for the current shark. They do show that release should be seriously and transparently assessed, rather than dismissed without examination.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR (Summary)

1. Establish an independent assessment process
   Bring together external specialists without conflicts of interest, including experts in whale shark biology, wildlife veterinary medicine, animal welfare, release procedures and post-release monitoring.Promptly assess the current shark’s health and suitability for release, and publish the criteria, evidence and conclusions used in that assessment.
2. Return the current shark to the sea if this can be done safely
   If specialists determine that release can be carried out without exposing the shark to unacceptable risk, prepare a responsible plan covering acclimatisation, transport, release location, timing and post-release tracking. Return the shark to the ocean as soon as reasonably and safely possible.
3. If immediate release is not currently safe, explain why
   If release is judged to present a serious risk to the shark, publish the reasons and supporting assessment. Continue examining what conditions or preparations would make a future release possible, while providing the highest attainable standard of care in the meantime.
4. Do not acquire another wild whale shark for display
   Do not transfer any further whale sharks from fixed fishing nets or the wild into the aquarium in order to continue the exhibit.
5. End the live whale shark exhibit
   Conclude Notojima Aquarium’s live whale shark exhibit when the current shark is safely released or when his care comes to an end. Do not replace him with another wild individual.
6. Move towards education that does not confine wild whale sharks
   Use films, life-size models, field research, habitat conservation and other educational methods that do not require removing wild whale sharks from the ocean.

This petition is not intended to blame individual aquarium employees.

Nor does it claim that all three previous deaths had the same cause.

The question is larger than individual husbandry practices.

Should wild animals be brought into tanks for entertainment, tourism and visitor attraction—and then replaced by another individual when the exhibit becomes empty?

Before being called an attraction, a symbol or a source of inspiration, this whale shark is an individual with a life of his own.

We ask Ishikawa Prefecture and Notojima Aquarium to seriously assess whether the current whale shark can safely return to the sea, to stop bringing new whale sharks into tanks, and to lead a transition towards education and recovery that do not depend on confining wild animals.
