Мy dear overseas supporters! Today I am finally ready to ask you for help regarding the two bears Masha, the mom and Baloo, the cub, for which we have been fighting for the last two years.

I have prepared a short presentation, you can watch it here https://youtu.be/WsGoQko77aQ

Two years ago, I started this petition against contact zoos in Russia where people get all the time in the world to touch wild animals to death.

The deeper I would go into this matter, the more issues with the Russian animals I would discover. I realized that many of them were just like slaves: circus, lab, fir farm animals, and animals for hunting are being severely abused and don’t have any rights. The list of those creatures is to be continued. I currently focus on all of those categories on Change.org.

Last year, I started the petition “Save the Russian bears!” Every year, thousands of bear cubs are orphaned by the hunters who kill their moms. Many of them get shot right on the spot, and their meat is sent over to the restaurants. “The luckiest” survivors are passed on to mobile circuses, zoos or roadside cafes. Those cubs grow bigger and live their life in itsy bitsy cages breathing in the vehicle exhaust. They’re unable to move around or hibernate. And there’s no hope for them to ever get out.

My petition supporters and I have been fighting for a couple of cafe bears in the South of Russia, Masha, a mom and Baloo, the cub. We were asking the authorities to either take the bears to a rehab center or give them away to a good zoo. However, on December 10, 2018, the family was separated: they passed the mom to a hunting dogs’ baiting station.

Following my updates, you may already know what a hunting dogs’ baiting station is. This is a place where wild animals like bears, foxes, badgers, wolves, boars become a live decoy for hunting dogs. Quite often, that involves taking the wild animals’ protective tools away. For instance, they can declaw the bears or put their eyes out.

This is exactly where our Masha, the mommy bear, is currently at. We got to find the address she was taken to.

We’d like to save both Masha and Baloo, her baby. We were able to find a good private zoo for them with spacious open-air areas, little pools, and wooden houses they’ll be able to hibernate in.

Future owners are willing to support them for free. There are both construction and transportation expenses we need to cover, though. We need special vans, a car, the construction supplies, and we also got to pay the contractors for their work.

We’ll get the bears as soon as their home is ready, and, of course, we’ll tell you how they’ve settled. We'll tell you where their shelter is, and you we’ll be able to see the place and the bears yourselves.

The bears badly need your help.

Now I would like to inform you about what is going on in the so called “whale jail” (Nakhodka, Primorye) where they still keep about 100 illegally captured Killer and Beluga whales.

On January 18-19 the orcas and Beluga whales were examined by experts. Currently the entire "adaptation center" together with the adjacent water area is completely covered with thick ice. This is a big problem for all enclosures (both open, with Beluga whales and closed, with killer whales). To fight the ice "center" workers have to use heat guns and compressors to disperse the water and manually remove the ice from the cages every day. The whales are accustomed to life in ice conditions, but they are absolutely not adapted to constant being in ice pieces and to people nearby who are continuously cleaning something in their immediate neighborhood. The work of man creates anxiety and is a potential source of severe stress for animals. So, in one of the small enclosures with Beluga whales there may be a dozen of people with crowbars, digging the ice and tossing the pieces over the fence. At such time animals remain under water much longer and are noticeably less active than usually.

Practically all killer whales have noticeable, unusual for this species skin changes.  Besides, their bodies are marked with cracks and scratches. Some orcas have skin lesions that may be due caused by fungal diseases. (Experts who have data from previous inspections note that previously the animals’ skin had almost no noticeable damage).

This may be the result of thermal injuries. This is quite likely because temperature dramatically drops at night.

A male named Kirill stands out – the altered areas occupy some parts of his fin and its upper back, while the skin peels off them with large flaps. Kirill's condition is alarming. He is inactive and looks sick being "hanging" on the water surface for a long time. He is all in the ice sludge, which can cause hypothermia. He has a special long, so-called "gentle" breathing, which can be a sign of pneumonia or other diseases of the internal organs. There are visible skin changes next to his dorsal fin. They are similar to injection marks, which may indicate therapeutic procedures.

There are visible changes with Beluga whales, too, many of them in the area of a head back, neck and respiratory. There appeared a lot of strange dark spots, which are unusual for species kept in captivity. One of the Belugas has visible signs of weight loss. Watch the video: Kirill may die https://youtu.be/AV5UFFGxqJY

From other side, as scientists say, there is no way to release the marine mammals into the sea right now because of the heavy ice. The situation is dangerous as the animals can die.
