The Issue

Russia's war on Ukraine began in 2014 and became a full-scale invasion in February 2022. In the years since, combined military casualties on both sides have passed two million killed, wounded, or missing — hundreds of thousands of them Russians sent to die by the very leadership that started the war. The UN has verified more than 16,000 civilians killed in Ukraine and states the true toll is higher. Among the war's most documented crimes is the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia — the UN's inquiry has confirmed cases as crimes against humanity, Ukraine puts the total near 20,000, and it is the basis of the International Criminal Court's 2023 arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin himself. Millions more have been driven from their homes into countries already under economic strain. These are not the costs of a war that had to happen — they follow from one government's decision, and one man's.

Inside Russia, basic rights have been hollowed out from within the law itself. The courts work efficiently, as a weapon: "discrediting the armed forces" laws turn a post or a placard into a prison term. And the state now fills its ranks by force — men detained on the street and pressured into signing army contracts, migrants coerced into "volunteering" under threat of deportation or worse, foreigners made to choose between the front and losing their legal status. Ukrainians endure a war their country never chose — occupation, bombardment, forced deportation — while Russians who refuse it face the apparatus built to silence them. The damage crosses every border: millions displaced, the war now a measurable driver of global emissions — an estimated 311 million tonnes of CO₂ over four years, equal to France's annual output. And it is no longer contained — a Russian missile struck deep inside Poland in July, a drone surfaced at a German airport in August, and NATO intelligence now assesses a possible Russian move against the alliance within years, not decades.

Strip away the geopolitics and one fact remains: this war is a machine for ending human lives, and it runs only because one man keeps feeding it. Over two million people killed, wounded, or missing. Hundreds of thousands of Russians sent to die for lines on a map and a vision of empire that lives only in his head. Ukrainian children taken from their families. There is a word for a man who spends human lives on this scale to satisfy his own ambition — and it is not "statesman." Each of these was a person who could have lived, and each death since this war could have ended is not a tragedy that befell Russia but a choice made in one office. This is not the miscalculation of a rational leader or the delusion of a sick one — it is something plainer and worse: a man who knows the cost and pays it in other people's lives because his pride is worth more to him than they are. He does not need to be declared unwell. He needs to stop holding the power to keep this going.

We who sign this are people against this war — Russians and others, together. Not a party, not a government, not anyone's foreign policy: people who refuse to let this be done in our name. To Russians reading this: the ones dying in this war are your sons and neighbors, and the man spending them is not Russia — he is one ruler who has confused himself with the country. We do not ask for a better emperor to replace him. We say plainly that no vision of empire is worth the lives it is costing, that this war must end, and that it will not end while the one man who chose it and refuses to stop it still holds the power to continue.

And to those inside the system who already know this — the deputies, the officials, the people with a conscience and a desk in a building that serves this war: we know you exist. Some of you have said it aloud and paid for it. This is addressed to you too. Not as a demand you cannot safely meet, but as a count of the people standing where you would stand if it were safe — so that the day it becomes possible to act, you know how many were already with you. His removal is not a solution to everything; it is the one thing that has to happen before anything else can. We are not asking permission. We are refusing our consent, and we are saying so where it can be counted.

Add your name. One signature doesn't stop a war — but a regime like this one runs on a lie, that everyone agrees or no one dares object. Every visible name is a crack in that lie. A soldier deciding whether to go, an official deciding whether to speak, someone afraid they are the only one — each of them counts the names. That is the one thing a list like this can do that nothing else can: prove the silence was never agreement. Make the number impossible to ignore. Add your name, and make it bigger.
