ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER IN NORILSK. IS THIS THE END OF THE TAIMYR REINDEER POPULATION?

An emergency situation with a diesel fuel spill in Norilsk threatens local fauna. Biologists say that the scale of the accident is too large, and the environment has been irreparably damaged. Animals and birds in the emergency zone are facing mass poisoning.

Hundreds of plant species, including those listed in the Red book, have been registered in the territory that is at risk of infection, ecologists say.

Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, lemmings, polar wolves, polar bears, rodents, and reindeer are at risk? As well as birds - ducks, geese, swans, sandpipers. "All species at a distance of several tens of kilometers from the poisoned river will die,  fish-eaters will suffer the most. Birds, even far from the accident, will become weak, vulnerable, and susceptible to diseases, " warns Vladimir Latka, an ecologist.

Researchers are particularly concerned about the Taimyr population of wild reindeer, previously one of the most numerous. "Now there are fewer of them, including due to poaching. And here's another blow to these animals, " says Latka. — They constantly migrate, overcome water crossings. A polluted area is a risk to their lives: reindeer love lichen, and it absorbs chemicals like a sponge. The animals will get poisoned, get sick, and die."
