While all 50 states now have added felony animal abuse laws to their state laws, what good is a law that is not enforced? Case after case of felony animal abuse cases are not charged, are charged and then released, are charged and plead down to misdemeanors. When they are charged with a felony, the sentence is not strong enough, but at least a felony will be tracked.
This year, 2016, the FBI will start tracking felony animal abuse as a crime against society. While this is a good step, two things need to happen in every state for it to work toward better laws. 1. Existing felony laws must be enforced. 2. Local law agencies must report felony animal charges to the FBI' Universal Crime Report system.
As we are the voices for our animal companions, we need to have some way to keep track these cases that can't get a paw in the courthouse door! We support each other, put pressure on so existing laws are enforced, and appeal to legislators to strengthen our laws and our weak definitions of felony animal cruelty.
This movement was inspired by Bill Robbins and the Justice for Kona case in Oregon. While we are still fighting for justice for Kona, we want to gather and join forces with others across the US and keep up to date on what our states are doing about these "Crimes against Society" according to the FBI.
Let us be pack leaders in each state for protecting our animals from criminals.
