More than 90,000 people on Change.org have backed petitions opposing the Government’s new visa rules, which include an increase in minimum salaries and tightened restrictions on family dependants coming to the UK.
On 4th December 2023, Home Secretary James Cleverly introduced a range of measures he says will cut immigration to the UK. The most controversial part of the plan is the hiking of minimum salaries for visa applicants.
The minimum salary for skilled overseas workers will rise from £26,200 to £38,700, while the minimum income for family visas will increase from £18,600 to £29,000 — and to £38,700 by "early 2025".
Mr Cleverly said his plans, which are due to come into effect next spring, will reduce the number of migrants by 300,000 a year, but critics have warned that families would be split up under the proposals.
The visa rule changes have sparked a wave of petitions on Change.org in the UK, with several opposing the new salary thresholds.
