We, Fridays For Future Shizuoka (a youth environmental group in Shizuoka prefecture) and Friends of the Earth Japan call on relevant parties to immediately stop any construction work  of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen　(Japanese Maglev) project and cancel the project plan itself.

The Linear Shinkansen is the fastest speed train in the world that JR Tokai developed, aiming at connecting three big cities, Toyko, Nogoya and Osaka in one hour and creating a huge economic metropolitan area. The research and development of linear system started about sixty years ago. For a long time, it had been called the "Dream Super Express" with a hope.

However, we are faced with climate change and spread of infectious diseases, such as covid-19, today. We need to head to more sustainable society in the future, which will not be realized with  linear project.

Linear construction destroys the nature and ecosystem of the Southern Japanese Alps, causes adverse impact on essential water, increases the risk of natural disasters, promotes urban concentration in large cities, makes rural areas depend on infrastructure development, violates the human rights of local people along the Linear Sinkansen’s line, consumes a huge amount of energy and doesn’t promise transportation security.

In Shizuoka prefecture, water supply for 620,000 people will be threatened by the construction of the Linear project. Other serious issues have been also occurring in the other prefectures, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Nagano, Gifu and Aichi, where the construction is already underway.
