Preserve the Descriptions by A-bombed writers of Hiroshima in UNESCO's Memory of the World
The Issue
I'm Yusuke Kawaguchi, member of "the Association for Preservation of Literary Materials of Hiroshima"
Our group, the Association for Preservation of Literary Materials of Hiroshima, in cooperation with Hiroshima City Government makes an application to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register for precious materials left by atomic-bombed victims who risked their lives recording their experiences just after the historic explosion.
The records we are preserving are:
- Sadako KURIHARA, “Daily Notebook of Poems”
- Tamiki HARA, “Notebook from the Time of the Atomic Bombing”
- Sankichi TOGE, “Diary of the Atomic Bombing,” “Notes, Memoranda, and Thoughts,” and “Poems of the Atomic Bombing (Final Draft)”
*Yoko OTA’s manuscript “City of Corpses” (digitization coming soon)
These are firsthand manuscripts by Hibakusha, survivors of the first atomic bombing in human history. The writers were exposed to the bombing near the center of downtown Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and conveyed the terrible scene of the aftermath, establishing the unique historic value of these manuscripts.
Our group members have been working for the preservation of A-bomb literature. Because 78 years have passed since the explosion, we have some serious obstacles to our work, such as the advancing age of Hibakusha and the fact that our memories of wartime experiences have been steadily fading over time. To overcome these problems and warn the world about the horrendous effects of nuclear war, we propose that Hiroshima's atomic bomb literature be registered as "Memory of the World".
Because the threat of nuclear war has not diminished even today, Hiroshima's atomic bomb literature should be better known to the world. That can only occur through permanent preservation under the auspices of an international organization in recognition of these records’ significant educational, scientific, and cultural value to humanity.

The deadline for signatures is August 20th.
Thank you.
