Kevin Rudd reformed the rules for the election of the Labor leader so that members would have 50% of the say. This is a vital reform, as the party has suffered in recent years by disenfranching its own supporters and distancing itself from public and community input. It is essential that the ALP learn the lesson of the 2013 election. The party must be open and porous to the community, listen to its supporters and voters and prioritise strong progressive values. Labor must not repeat its mistakes of the past and select its leaders through closed factional fixes and deals.

No matter who stands for ALP Leader, it is vital that the candidates submit themselves to a ballot of party members. No one should be afraid of a mature and holistic debate on the party's future direction.

There is warranted fear that if the new caucus rules are not used, they will be overturned by union powerbrokers and factional bosses. Labor members, Labor supporters and progressive voters of good will need a say in the election of the leader!
