McNeil Park is more than just a patch of green space in our beloved city of Dayton; it's a symbol of our community's rich history and heritage. For over a century, the park and ballfield which are nestled next to the beautiful St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, have stood proudly on land generously donated to the city by one of Dayton's founding families, offering generations a place to gather, play, and create memories. Now, this treasured site is under threat of development—a new water tower proposal that risks destroying the essence of what makes McNeil Park and the Historic Village so special.

The historical significance of the park and church cannot be overstated. It serves as a living monument to our community's origins and values, representing a continual link to our past. The proposed construction not only threatens to disrupt this legacy but also endangers a peaceful haven and recreational area cherished by families, athletes, and history enthusiasts alike.

Furthermore, alternative solutions exist for the improvement of our city's infrastructure without compromising our heritage. Our proposal includes exploring current municipal lands with less historical impact or utilizing advanced technology to enhance existing water systems. By committing to these responsible and forward-thinking approaches, we can satisfy our city's growing needs while preserving the irreplaceable character of the Historic Village.

Development is crucial for progress, but not at the cost of erasing our past. Once these historical sites are gone, they’re gone forever. The city of Dayton has a responsibility to honor its origins and protect spaces that hold deep cultural and historical value. We urge the city planner and council to reconsider the current plan and to find a more suitable alternative for the water tower.

Join us in this mission to save a piece of Dayton's soul for future generations. Protect McNeil Park from commercialization and ensure the spirit of our ancestors lives on through this cherished public space. Sign this petition and help us advocate for a thoughtful balance between development and preservation.
