Tom Steyer is an American billionaire, philanthropist, environmentalist, liberal activist, and fundraiser. Born on June 27, 1957, he is best known for his dedication to battling climate change and is the founder of Farallon Capital, a San Francisco-based hedge fund which he ran until 2012. He is also a co-founder of OneCalifornia Bank, which is now known as Beneficial State Bank, an Oakland-based community development bank. Steyer has made substantial contributions to the Democratic Party and has spearheaded multiple political campaigns, including a high-profile campaign advocating for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. In 2020, he ran briefly as a candidate in the Democratic primaries for President of the United States.
