Having a small family flock has always been a dream of mine. Living in Dublin, I'm continuously inspired by the potential for sustainable and self-sufficient living even in suburban settings. However, the current Ordinance 336 limits us to a flat cap of just 6 hens on residential lots, which poses challenges for families like mine who aim to responsibly cultivate and maintain a larger flock to feed ourselves.

This policy feels outdated, especially considering the evidence from modern community frameworks worldwide. Many of these frameworks operate successfully on a density-based model rather than a rigid number cap. Such models allow up to 20 hens, adhering to humane and environmental standards, proving beneficial for both the families owning the flocks and their communities.

Research consistently shows that with proper spacing and care, hens can be kept in a quiet, clean, and odor-free environment. This is backed by the global 'pasture-raised' animal welfare guidelines, which promote the humane treatment of animals while integrating them into suburban ecosystems sustainably. Not only does this approach adhere to high standards of animal welfare, it also enhances the diversity and vibrancy of local communities.

By modernizing Ordinance 336 with a density-based framework, we can align Dublin with progressive urban agriculture policies adopted by cities globally. These policies have demonstrated benefits in terms of sustainability, community welfare, and local food production. A reformed ordinance could provide opportunities for educational initiatives around agriculture and sustainability, bring families closer to nature, and strengthen community ties by promoting local sharing economies.

This is not just about increasing the number of hens; it's about contributing to a greater vision for Dublin as a leader in sustainable living and urban agriculture. I urge the Borough Council to consider this evidence-based, humane, and community-friendly approach to modernize our cherished suburban spaces.

Let's work together to make Dublin more sustainable and self-sufficient without compromising on our community standards. Please sign this petition to support the modernization of Ordinance 336 and allow our residents the freedom to live in harmony with nature.
