Philip Heath Mendelson is an American politician serving as the Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia, a position he assumed on June 13, 2012, after the resignation of Kwame R. Brown. He was elected to complete Brown's term in a citywide special election on November 6, 2012, and subsequently re-elected to full terms in 2014 and 2018. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Mendelson has been an influential figure in Washington, D.C. politics. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from American University. Before becoming Chairman, Mendelson served as an At-Large Councilmember and was involved in local governance as a member of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission.
