In the heart of Owosso, Michigan, a cherished tradition is under threat. For decades, residents have kept chickens on their property not just as pets, but as a crucial source of food. Owosso's community has thrived on this long-standing practice, using it to supplement their diets with fresh eggs and poultry, especially important in these challenging economic times.

Unfortunately, this tradition has come under fire. Due to a few complaints, city officials are considering revoking the right to keep backyard chickens, turning a blind eye to the countless families who rely on this resource to make ends meet. This decision does not reflect the values or the needs of the majority of Owosso's residents, who cherish their ability to maintain a degree of self-sufficiency in an unforgiving economic climate.

The price of living continues to rise, with inflation making basic groceries scarcely affordable for many families in our community. Chickens offer a sustainable and economically viable solution, providing food security to those who need it the most. By allowing residents to keep chickens, we empower them, giving them the tools to support themselves and their families.

Additionally, there are numerous successful models from cities around the U.S. where backyard chickens are allowed with minimal issues. Implementing fair regulations that address noise and cleanliness can preserve the wellbeing of our neighbors while keeping the spirit of self-reliance alive. Owosso has the opportunity to follow these examples and ensure a harmonious balance between community needs and individual rights.

We urge Owosso's city officials to consider the positive impact that chickens have on our community. They are more than just animals; they are lifelines for many. Let's not allow a few complaints to dismantle a tradition that benefits so many of us. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the preservation of a critical resource and supporting countless families in our town. Please, join us in urging the city to let the residents of Owosso keep their beloved chickens.
