Mary Landrieu is a distinguished American political figure who served as a U.S. Senator from Louisiana from 1997 to 2015. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was notably the first woman from Louisiana to be elected to the U.S. Senate. During her senate tenure, Landrieu became known for her advocacy on issues such as healthcare, education, and energy, often taking moderate stances that reflected her desire to represent Louisianians apolitically. Prior to her senate service, she held positions in state government, including eight years as Louisiana's State Treasurer. She is the daughter of former New Orleans Mayor Maurice Edwin Landrieu and the sister of Mitch Landrieu, a former mayor of New Orleans himself.
