John Laird is an accomplished American politician and a member of the Democratic Party, currently serving as the California State Senator for District 17 since December 7, 2020. Now in his second term, he brings extensive experience from his previous roles, including serving as the Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency from 2011 to 2019. Laird was also a member of the California State Assembly from 2002 to 2008, representing the 27th district, which included parts of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties. His political career began with his role as a Councilmember on the Santa Cruz City Council and as a Trustee at the Cabrillo College Board of Trustees. Laird's educational background includes a high school diploma from Hogan High School.
