James Francis Murphy, born in 1967, is a former Scottish politician affiliated with the Labour Party. He served as the Leader of the Scottish Labour Party from 2014 to 2015 and held the position of Secretary of State for Scotland between 2008 and 2010. Murphy was the Member of Parliament for East Renfrewshire, formerly Eastwood, from 1997 until 2015. Known for his social democratic views, he supports Western interventionism in foreign policy and is considered to be on the right of the Labour Party. His extensive political career includes roles such as Shadow Secretary of State for Defence and Shadow Secretary of State for International Development. Murphy holds a high school diploma from Newport News High School and has experience in business, notably as an owner and operator at Shoppers Rule, Inc.
