The government of Malta operates under a parliamentary representative democratic republic framework, wherein the President is the head of the state and the Prime Minister is the head of government. Executive power is vested in the President and exercised by the Cabinet, which is selected by the Prime Minister and approved by the President. The Judiciary system is independent of both the Executive and Legislature. Malta features a multiparty system and follows universal suffrage for citizens over 18 years. Its law-making body, the Parliament, is unicameral and made up of the House of Representatives. Malta's constitution upholds respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
