Every resident of Highland City, Utah, treasures their right to privacy. As a U.S. citizen living within our city limits, I am gravely concerned that Flock cameras infringe upon our constitutional rights under the 4th Amendment. By collecting personal and identifiable information (PII) without our consent, these cameras are a direct violation of our rights, and this issue needs immediate attention.

Flock cameras are strategically placed in various locations throughout Highland City. They are continuously recording and storing data and images of vehicles and their license plates. While proponents may argue that these devices increase security, the reality is they operate without the explicit consent of individuals whose data is being collected. This approach is not only intrusive but in direct contradiction to the fundamental rights promised by our Constitution.

The 4th Amendment serves to protect citizens against unreasonable searches and seizures, guaranteeing the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects. The use of these surveillance cameras by leveraging agreements with local law enforcement surreptitiously violates this protection, subjecting everyone driving within our city to unwarranted scrutiny. The ease with which this data could potentially be misused or hacked only heightens the risk, adding to the concerns of privacy and security for our residents.

Educative institutions and legal offices in Utah have previously underscored the importance of adhering strictly to individual rights and freedoms. Data from numerous privacy advocacy groups indicate a rise in concern over digital surveillance practices that lack transparency and consent. If unchecked, such actions threaten to normalize privacy violations under the guise of safety.

We have alternative methods to ensure security without compromising privacy, such as increased community policing, investing in local neighborhood watch programs, and enhancing community engagement with law enforcement. These strategies build trust and cooperation rather than eroding rights.

I urge Highland City leadership, specifically Mayor Brittney P. Bills, to take a stand. The removal of Flock cameras is not just a corrective action but a reaffirmation of our commitment to uphold privacy rights. Let's work together to find solutions that keep our community safe while respecting the individual freedoms that define us as Americans.

Please sign this petition to remove Flock cameras and protect our 4th Amendment rights. Your support is crucial in advocating for a community where privacy and security can coexist.
