The Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı, also known as the Presidency of Religious Affairs, is an official governmental institution in Turkey established in 1924, upon the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate. The institution oversees religious affairs across the country such as establishment of mosques, appointment of imams and religious educators, as well as regulating the practice of Islam. It also provides religious education, manages charitable donations, and handles matters related to worship, Hajj affairs and religious guidance. The Presidency of Religious Affairs acts as the highest Islamic religious authority in the country and is directly responsible to the Prime Minister’s Office.
