Stop Selling Eggs From Cruel Battery Cage Farms

My name is Quilla and I live in Washington. I’ve always been an animal lover and I’m proud of the recent changes I’ve seen made this year by large corporations, like Walmart and Compass Group, to move away from cruel farming practices. Just this past week, I saw a video that shows inside a farm that does the exact opposite and that farm is one of the biggest suppliers to Costco. Costco is one of the largest retailers in the world and was even among the companies to publicly indicate that it wanted to eliminate cage confinement of chickens from its supply chain. Eight years have passed and still Costco continues to support this terrible practice. The video shows birds crammed into tiny wire cages, with them and their cage mates without any room to spread their wings or clean themselves. The birds are forced to walk on the mummified corpses of their cage mates who suffered a painful death in the terrible conditions. The video goes on to show several other inhumane conditions the birds are living in, including dead birds on the ground. These conditions are nothing like what Costco is advertising to us. Their packaging shows green pastures and happy hens, hiding the true cruelty in their supply chain. Although the truth has been exposed, Costco continues to refuse to address this issue and even released a statement claiming that "we believe Hillandale Farms is committed to animal welfare”. Please sign my petition and tell Costco to stop buying eggs from these cruel, unsustainable, and disgusting battery cage farms.

Stop Gender Stereotyping: Provide Universally Accessible Changing Tables in All Your Stores

As a new dad, I recently learned an unfortunate reality about changing diapers while out in public with a child. Almost all public changing tables are in women's bathrooms, which makes it nearly impossible to find a table that's accessible to dads. As crazy as it sounds, many stores don’t give dads the option to change their babies’ diapers. It's 2015, families are diverse, and it is an injustice to assume it’s only a woman's job to handle changing diapers. This assumption is gender stereotyping and companies should be supporting all parents that shop at their stores equally – no matter their gender. Changing tables in men's rooms will be a tiny step in the long process of rectifying the legacy of gender discrimination, but it's a step we need to take. Dads, like myself, want to participate equally in the child care process and our society should support that.  Target and Costco have proven themselves time and time again to be companies that honor diversity, support families, and provide great services to kids of all ages. That is why I am calling on them to be the change. As leaders in their industry, they can initiate a company-wide policy to provide universally accessible changing tables in their stores.  If Target and Costco take this step, I know that other companies will follow suit and recognize that we should be supporting all parents equally.  #BeTheChange #LeanInTogether

Tell Costco to Stop Wholesale Ocean Destruction!

Everything about Costco is bigger than normal. Costco is the largest wholesale club operator in North America. People shop at Costco because of its bulk goods, low prices, and wide variety of merchandise. But, while Costco continues to grow bigger and bigger, so does its footprint on the environment. In the Costco grocery warehouse you’ll find freezers and coolers full of unsustainable fish. Greenpeace surveys found that Costco continues to sell fourteen of the twenty-two red list seafood items. Costco is enabling some of the most horrible seafood harvesting practices that are destroying our oceans. Many species of fish could die out if they're not conserved. Costco is not labeling its seafood properly, hiding the awful truth from its customers. Whether or not you eat fish, one of the best ways we can take action to stop the destruction of our oceans is to target specific grocery store chains that are buying and selling red-list fish. If we can change these companies (and we have before!), we can help save the oceans. Greenpeace urges Costco to implement a effective and publicly available sustainable seafood policy that creates transparency in its seafood labeling and prohibits the sale of red list species — starting now with Chilean sea bass. Other red list species from fisheries that are dangerously depleted must also be removed. Sustainable seafood policies will reduce pressure on declining fish stocks and help heal our ailing oceans. Costco must use its massive buying power to leverage positive change in our oceans. Tell Costco that our oceans deserve better.

Help end modern slavery in the Thai fishing industry

A six-month investigation by The Guardian has found that the Thai fishing industry is “built on slavery”, with trafficked workers enduring 20-hour shifts, regular beatings, torture and execution-style killings. Some are even driven to suicide, all to support the flow of cheap farmed prawns and shrimp sold around the world.[1] And the revelations don’t end there. Three big global retailers — Walmart, Carrefour and Costco — are all named as customers of a seafood supplier in Thailand with proven links to slavery. Which means that prawns and shrimp whose production relies upon slave labour might well end up in your shopping basket. Call on the big three retailers to help eliminate modern slavery in the Thai fishing industry by: Joining Thailand-based initiative Project Issara, co-ordinated by Anti-Slavery International, designed to eliminate modern slavery from the Thai seafood industry;[2] Enforcing their zero tolerance policies on forced labour by independently inspecting their Thai supply chain for modern slavery and publishing their findings. Encouragingly, Tesco has already agreed to take these necessaryand practical steps, following the revelations in The Guardian. By sending a strong message to the three remaining major retailers, we can help ensure that the 300,000 people working in Thailand’s fishing industry are treated as human beings, not slaves. Start Processing 35mm Film Again

Photo by Rodney Alan   My name is Kelvin Wang, and I am a photographer in high school, currently shooting on film. To get my film processed, I have to travel downtown - a 2 hour commute. I spend a lot of money on public transit alone to get my film processed. I doesn't have to and shouldn't be this way. I live right near a costco, a mere kilometer away.  For many years, Costco was THE place to go to get your film processed. At around $1.59 per roll, it's probably the cheapest you could get, as most other places run you around $10.00 per roll. However in 2015, right in the beginning of a film renaissance, with movements like lomography getting off the ground, and people realizing where their instagram filters came from, Costco shuttered it's film processing service. It's film processing was not only cheap, but was of great quality and was the choice of many photographers. Killing this service would make sense in 2009, at the height of the digital craze, but statistics show that film in fact is making a comeback. People used to be able to go right to their local Costco to get their film developed, and now most people have to drive sometimes hours, to town, to a camera store. Most of these camera stores also develop 120 and other specialty films. Killing this developing service not only turns a lot of people away from film, but makes 35mm colour negative no cheaper nor economical to shoot than other films. Killing this service made many people who still shoot film very upset, and also made them think, "Now What?!" I, myself, have to travel more than an hour downtown to go to one of two places that I know of near me that still processes film.   As photographer Rodney Alan Says,  "As I share the last rolls of film developed at Costco.  I’m going to miss the days of inexpensive 35mm film processing.  Where else can I find a “lab” that I can get my film processed with a 20 minute turn around and a hot dog and soda combo for $1.50?" -Rodney Alan Film Photography Is In No Danger Of Dying Out It has a very dedicated community, and in fact film is rising in popularity.
