Living as a student in Denton should be an empowering and transformative experience, but instead, many are finding themselves facing inadequate housing conditions and unjust treatment. This includes unexpected fees, unaddressed maintenance issues, and poor living conditions that undermine their university journey. Students, who should be focusing their attention on education and personal growth, are being side-lined by these housing issues.

What is most frustrating is the lack of oversight and regulation on student housing, which not only puts students in difficult situations but also allows property owners to take advantage of young individuals who often lack the resources to fight back. According to a recent survey, over 60% of students in Denton reported facing unfair rental practices or inadequate living conditions during their stay in student accommodations. This is an alarming number that cannot be ignored.

We propose setting up a fair regulatory framework that ensures student apartments adhere to higher standards. This would involve establishing a dedicated housing authority in Denton that focuses on issues unique to student housing. This organization would work closely with universities and local government to implement regular evaluations of student apartments, ensuring they meet specific health, safety, and fair practice guidelines.

Furthermore, a mandatory dispute resolution process should be introduced that offers students a cost-free method to mediate conflicts with landlords, especially for those with legitimate grievances about living conditions and fees. This initiative not only protects students, but holds landlords accountable, fostering a fairer and more equitable environment for everyone residing in the Denton student community.

Join us in demanding that Denton take the necessary steps to ensure healthy, safe, and fair living conditions for students. Help us provide students a voice and a secure living environment where they can thrive by signing this petition today.
