Barbara Mikulski is a renowned American politician who served as a Democratic U.S. Senator from Maryland from 1987 to 2017. Renowned for being the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. Congress, and the longest-serving U.S. Senator in Maryland history, she was a trailblazer for women in politics, often referred to as "Dean of the Women". Prior to her illustrious Senate career, Mikulski served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1986. Born in Baltimore to Polish parents, her political career started at the local government, where she served on the Baltimore City Council from 1971 to 1976. She is known for her competence and commitment towards her community, especially in advocating for health care, education, and women's rights.
