No More Milk in Our Mandirs

No More Milk in Our Mandirs

The Issue

We’ve caused too much pain and suffering to our mother cow and planet in the name of milk.

Let the violence end now. Let it end with each of us.

In our faith, the cow is revered as a symbol of purity and nourishment, and milk has been an integral part of our rituals. But today, the reality of the  dairy industry has changed. Factory-farmed cows live in pain and suffering, their milk now representing cruelty, not purity. By continuing to use milk in  our offerings, we are not only supporting an industry rooted in violence but also contributing to environmental destruction. It's time to rethink our  rituals and choose compassion.

The Problem

Abhishekam, the sacred pouring of milk in honor of Lord Shiva, was once an act of purity, where cows were cherished and their milk was a gift freely given. Today, cows in mega-dairy farms endure short, painful lives in harsh, confined conditions. They are forcibly impregnated, separated from their calves, and live under constant stress. Their milk no longer represents purity—it reflects violence and exploitation. Factory farming has stripped away the sanctity of this offering.

Beyond the cruelty, the dairy industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation. Large-scale animal agriculture consumes vast amounts of land, water, and crops, while producing enormous greenhouse gas emissions. Research shows that ending dairy and meat production could halt the rise of greenhouse gas emissions for 30 years, offering a critical window to address the climate crisis.

The Solution

We are calling on Hindu faith leaders to take a stand. By leading the way in replacing harmful milk offerings with cruelty-free alternatives, we can honor our faith and protect our planet. We ask that instead of milk, offerings such as water infused with organic rose petals, tulsi, or sandalwood chandan paste be used in our mandirs. These alternatives are pure, sustainable, and reflect the true spirit of devotion and non-violence.

Take the Pledge

You can help by pledging to stop the use of industrial dairy milk in our temples. We ask Hindu faith leaders, priests, acharyas, mandir presidents and care persons to commit to this change and educate their communities on the real impact of mega-dairy. Let’s end the suffering of our Mother Cow and protect the future of our planet.

Sign the pledge now and make your commitment to No More Milk in Our Mandirs. Together, we can replace cruelty with compassion and create rituals that truly honor life.
