Implement Automatic Divorce in Cases of Documented Abuse
The Issue
Our current laws demand that divorce processes be initiated by one or both parties involved in a marriage. This requirement overlooks victims of marital abuse, some of whom may not be in a position to initiate divorce due to various factors beyond their control. We propose an amendment to the law such that it allows for an automatic divorce when orders of protection have been filed, even if these orders were issued as far back as the 1990s - essentially, to 'Dissolve bad marriages automatically.' According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. Those who have taken the brave step to report this abuse to the police should not be tethered to their abusers by the bureaucracy of divorce proceedings or economic pressures that come with it. If an abuse case has been filed and an order of protection issued, it is a clear indication that the marriage does not serve the interests of both parties. Therefore, it would only be just to facilitate the dissolution process for the victims. Let's empower these voices and give them the chance to move forward safely and with dignity. Sign this petition to call on lawmakers to consider this change and protect victims of abusive relationships.
