Pay the Living Wage to cleaners at the Daily Mail

My name is Juliana (pseudonym) and I’m a cleaner at the Daily Mail - one of many, most of whom are from Latin America and Africa, who are paid the poverty wage of £7.50 per hour - below the living wage. Like almost all the cleaners, I have a family, and with the wages that we earn it is almost impossible to have a dignified place to live and a dignified life. It is very hard because of the physical and mental strain you go through in order to fulfill your duties with your employer. We grouped together and asked to be paid the London Living Wage of £10.20 per hour which would allow us to have an acceptable standard of living in the capital, to have an adequate level of warmth and shelter, a healthy diet, and allow us better integration and to avoid chronic stress. In other words, the London Living Wage would enable us to live and work in dignity. Instead of agreeing to our request to be paid a living wage, or to sit down and talk to our union United Voices of the World, the manager of the Daily Mail's contracting company MITIE threatened to sack us all if we ever strike. That threat was in gross violation of our trade union and human rights. The biggest difficulty on such a low wage is having to work overtime in order to survive and we have very little time to rest. Being able to cover all your responsibilities that you cannot fail to meet such as rent, tax, food, transport, etc. I dream of being able to have an income that allows me to meet the basic needs of my family. And also, why not? Being able to afford at least one family holiday. These offices are kept spick and span by a 100% migrant workforce. Sadly, the Mail have blamed migrants for depressing wages and yet the agency they employ choose to pay their cleaners the absolute minimum that is legally possible – a wage that keeps the cleaners in poverty - and then unlawfully suppresses any efforts to gain a pay rise. This dispute makes it crystal clear: those who are really responsible for low wages are not migrants, but rich employers like the Daily Mail, whose editor Paul Dacre received a whopping £2.37 million in remuneration last year, a 50% increase on the year before. Please support me and my colleagues as we face one of the hardest battles of our lives. I have never been on strike before but if we do it, it will only be to improve the life of my family.

Petition to Whole Foods Market, John Mackey, Jeff Bezos

    Compensate Essential Workers

Since March, Jeff Bezos' net wealth has increased by nearly $50 billion. In the same time, WFM has doubled its market value. Meanwhile, WFM Team Members have had their hazard pay docked and are consistently receiving greater and more comprehensive responsibilities in the workplace. This unequitable arrangement leaves Team Members uncompensated for work that puts their physical and mental health on the line all while building profits for an out of touch CEO.  We demand compensation for our work during the COVID-19 pandemic in accordance with WFM values. "We promote team member growth and happiness. Our success is dependent upon the collective energy, intelligence, and contributions of all of our Team Members. We design and provide safe and empowering environments where highly motivated people can flourish and reach their highest potential." Demanding exponentially more from team members while simultaneously removing hazard pay does not provide an empowering environment. Whole Foods IS dependant on the collective resources of Team Members: however, there is no action on the part of the company reflecting this. Team Members are struggling daily to reach the bare minimum let alone "their highest potential." "We create profits and prosperity. We are stewards for our parent company, Amazon, and we have a responsibility to use their capital wisely and frugally with the goal to increase its value over the long-term. We will grow at such a pace that our customer satisfaction, Team Member happiness, and financial health continue to flourish together." Any and all profits do not cycle back to stores. Since the removal of Gainsharing, the pace of growth has stifled Team Member happiness. There is no flourishing here other than that of the company as an entity. Profit making has come before all priorities.  If we cannot receive wages that meet the demands we as Team Members are put under, then WFM cannot expect Team Members to continue on with the status quo. Our concerns for our health are serious. Our demand for compensation shouldn't be ignored. We deserve a minimum of $2 hazard pay until COVID has diminished.  We are essential, not sacrificial. Pay us like your business depends on us.

    Hazardous pay for healthcare workers

I am aware of the coronovirus situation we are facing. This is more serious than people are taking it. As a Respiratory therapist I am considered to be most exposed to these type of patients. Rather intubating a patient who comes in with respiratory distress, or administering nebulizers, placing patient on Bipap or Vapotherms, High flow oxygen devices. I am the one who manages the Ventilator. I am the airway I will be in the patients face and be at risk. Like many times before with other situations a patient comes in and the whole ER staff is exposed later finding out that we were exposed to this patient and now have to get testing and take special medications for example being exposed to TB and having to be medicated for 3 months; or meningitis and having to be medicated. This Coronovirus is much more serious and has proven to be more deadly. We are supposed to be at social distancing however as a healthcare provider I cannot stay home we have to come to work in any situation and care for patients. I love what I do however I don’t feel we are recognized enough for what we do. Please allow us a raise or at least HAZARDOUS PAY throughout the healthcare system immediately! Thanks

    Make lawn care workers essential!

As many of you know our industry in the state of Michigan has been labeled “non essential”. This is the time of the year that fertilizer companies start applications. Mulch gets installed, dead grass gets raked up. For many this is a big spring clean up period. As a lawn care professional we ride around yards by ourselves on mowers or sprayers. Before this virus most of us wore masks and gloves already. If you look up social distancing in the dictionary you will see a photo of a lawn care professional. By forcing us to stay home the governor is adding thousands more people to the unemployed list who could very easily still be working. Other states have governors who labeled lawn care as essential. In the state of Michigan if we get “caught” we are in jeopardy of losing our business license for over a year and a $500-$1000 fine. Like we have stated many times to our state representatives, we work in yards.........we do not interact with people.......we need this time of the season to prepare ourselves for the rest of the season. If you think lawn care companies should fall under the essential list, please sign and support your local lawn care company. Let’s make our voice heard.
