Schools need to better assist students who have suffered sexual assault by other students

I am acting on the school's request of changing the petition as my present actions contravene the School and District Code of Conduct. Therefore, I must be kept at home until all changes in the petition are made. At the high school I attend, Mount Boucherie Senior Secondary school there was a protest about how the school dealt with a heavy situation, sexual assault allegations. In the case that triggered the protest, the accuser wasn’t heard until she protested. The accuser had to go to these lengths to feel safe in school. No one should have to go to such lengths to feel safe. Schools should better the environment by creating a policy that neither discriminates against either student or makes the accuser feel pressured. Both should feel heard in this situation. A good start to this would be removing any students with criminal charges from school grounds while keeping close contact with them until the situation is resolved and then move forward with RCMP protocol after charges are either placed or dismissed. In cases where charges are laid the students must remain in online school to ensure safety for all students in schools. I would also like to address the fact that adults who will never have to walk in the shoes of students get the final say on topics and policies like these. I feel as though we as students know what is best for us, what will help us feel safe and protected. We should play a part in the final vote and/or say in creating policies. Not only will it allow us to get to say our thoughts on the education system but it will teach us more about the government system and how democracy works. Along with allowing us to feel heard and protected in the school system.  To the schools and the districts please hear us and stand with us, not against us, support us. If you would like more information on the protest I would recommend looking at these links for more information on the situation to make a good judgment: (https://www.castanet.net/news/West-Kelowna/360036/Student-protest-at-Mount-Boucherie-Senior-Secondary-over-sexual-assault-allegations castanet article including video, Madison Erhardt) (https://www.sexassault.ca/statistics.htm sexual assault statistics, sexualassault.ca)  If you feel this petition represents how you feel please make sure to sign it so we can go to the school boards and attempt to make a change!!

Urge Congress to Put Veterans’ Benefits Before Politics

Veterans should never be victims of Capitol Hill inaction. One bill can guarantee veterans their benefits – no matter what. But Congress must act by year-end. Help us bring this vital measure to a vote, before time runs out. Many of America’s veterans and their families depend on monthly Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) benefits. Yet inaction and prolonged government shutdowns could cut them off cold, leaving millions of Americans waiting. Help urge Congress to act today by voting yes to the Putting Veterans Funding First Act (S. 932 / H.R. 813). This bipartisan bill will guarantee veterans receive their disability compensation, pension, education and rehabilitation benefits on time, without delay. The Putting Veterans Funding First Act protects veterans against government shutdowns, bad politics and partisan gridlock by ensuring the VA's budgets are fully funded before the beginning of every year. The legislation was already approved overwhelmingly by both the Senate and House Veterans’ Affairs Committees, yet the bill has stalled. This bill does not ask for additional funding. It simply guarantees veterans get the benefits they were promised. That’s all. In the Senate, this bipartisan legislation has the support of Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders and Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray, and Majority Leader Harry Reid has promised to hold a vote on the bill this year.  In the House, Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan both support the bill, yet nothing has moved forward. Join DAV, VFW, VVA, MOPH, VetsFirst, NAUS, BVA, NGAUS, CPOA, and many other veterans organizations to help protect veterans’ benefits by asking your senators and representatives to keep their promise and put #veteransfundingfirst.

Petition to Bristol's Mayor, Bristol City Council

Build a statue to properly commemorate the slaves who suffered for Bristol!

As I'm sure some of you are aware, today (Sunday 7th June 2020) the statue of Edward Colston was pulled down at the Black Lives Matter Protest. He has been subject to much controversy over how we remember the History and Heritage of Bristol (and indeed that of the British Empire). Although he contributed to the building of Bristol into the rich and vibrant city it is today, he was heavily funded by the slave trade. We have a duty to remember the enslaved people that toiled for our city and Empire, which is a key factor as to why Colston had a statue, music hall, street and school named after him; he would serve as a reminder of our history through these. The years of debate over his statue and the renaming of the Colston Hall haven't been fruitful, although they have brought more awareness. Given that his statue has been pulled down, we are faced with a new opportunity to build a new statue, one that commemorates the enslaved people and the Black Lives Matter movement. I plan to give this petition to the Mayor of Bristol and the Council in order to fund a new statue, one that respects the rich history of Bristol and those who toiled for us and still suffer as a result of the racism borne out of the slave trade. Please help stand alongside the Black Lives Matter Movement and help remember the history of our beautiful city!
