Petition to Minister of Child and Women Welfare, Child and Women Welfare Committee
Promote Holistic Programmes to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse
Teaching children ‘Good Touch and Bad Touch’ is not good enough to prevent child sexual abuse. ‘Safe Touch and Unsafe Touch’ is comparatively better, but certainly not comprehensive or impactful enough to prevent all forms of child sexual abuse. Horrific incidents of child sexual abuse that have come to light in India have prompted at least some schools to start training children on prevention of sexual abuse in recent times. However, most of the schools seem to restrict the training of children to ‘Good touch/Bad touch’. It propagates the myth that there has to be ‘TOUCH’ involved for it to be considered sexual abuse. Consider the following examples. An abuser is watching the kid bathe or change clothes. Or Forcing the child to watch porn. Or sending the child porn images on Whatsapp. Or coming very close to the child and pretending to touch but not in fact touching. Or exhibiting the genitals to the child. Or masturbating in front of the child. Do all these constitute child sexual abuse? Yes, it better is considered child sexual abuse. If you notice, none of what I have written above as examples of child sexual abuse involve ‘touch’. Then why are we exclusively emphasizing on ‘good touch/bad touch’? In this appeal, I shall focus on all the topics that require to be addressed with children in order to make our programmes more holistic. 1. To begin with, myths pertaining to child sexual abuse must be addressed 2. Different forms of abuse - Contact and Non-Contact forms of Child Sexual Abuse must be addressed 3. Process of Grooming used by abusers must be addressed 4. Enumeration of what must be done when abused must be reiterated to the child Let us not assume children won’t understand. Let’s explore ways to help them understand using means that they learn best. Let's invest in creating animation, infographics, videos, role plays, quizzes, hypothetical case studies etc. WE MUST TRY. I could be wrong, but with my limited work with children, I do know that most children as young as 7-8 year old do understand the concept. Let us also not worry that teaching children regarding these finer aspects are going to curb them off their 'innocence'. I am writing this because I have heard parents, teachers, and so many speaking on these lines. What innocence are we talking about? Is keeping children uninformed, ill-informed regarding the many shades of child sexual abuse the way to protect their ‘Innocence’. Awareness is empowering, when promoted through dialogue. Children must be dialogued with on everything that concerns them. One would be amazed what children can bring to the table when given safe space to voice their feelings and thoughts.

Petition to Starbucks
Promote Reusables, Starbucks!
I have been a big fan of Starbucks coffee for a number of years. I currently work part-time for my city in CO. Starting and maintaining a volunteer program for our community’s recycling center is part of my job. Every other month we meet for a “coffee catch-up” for updates and planning. If I suggest Starbucks for our meeting, my volunteers discourage that and mention their concerns about sustainability issues with your company. Recently I contacted your 800 number and spoke to a very well-informed and helpful employee. I told him the above story and made two suggestions that I hope your company will consider that I’ll list here: I always bring a reusable container (that I purchased at Starbucks ;) when I visit Starbucks and receive .10 cents off my purchase. I realize that after 30 – 40 visits, one could say that I’ve earned a “free drink.” I notice most people don’t bring their own containers but I believe more would if this “realization” was emphasized. For example, you could create a permanent “stardash” that is: “Earn a free drink after X-many visits with your reusable cup!” I’m sure you could track those numbers as you do all other stardashes. A local coffee shop near the Starbucks I frequent charges patrons for the next size down when they bring reusables. My volunteers usually vote to go there. Would Starbucks consider doing that…even if on an occasional basis?

Promote Clean Water for Future Generations
Our water is DIRTY! The water is getting more and more polluted with all of the waste and trash that humans are carelessly throwing away. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge swirling mass of trash in the North Pacific Ocean, keeps on getting worse everyday. Did you know, according to the National Ocean Service, it takes 450 years for plastic water bottles to fully decompose! And it takes fishing line 600 years! The problem is not just in the ocean. The Hudson Bay is so polluted that the residents aren't even allowed to take a swim! To make matters worse, the Bellandur Lake in Bangalore, India, actually caught on fire from all of the pollution. There are countless problems like this around the world, and it is time to make a change! Our mission is to get people who care about the future of our planet to sign our petition and share it with others. In doing so, we hope to get world Environmental Protection Agency leaders to enact clean water legislation. With YOUR help, we hope to have this water dilemma change.

Tell The NY Times: do not promote climate denial at your paper
Tell The New York Times that climate denial should have no place on its editorial page! Please sign and share our petition! The New York Times has hired the columnist Bret Stephens, who is on record dismissing climate change as “hysteria generated by an imperceptible temperature rise of 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880.” In his first column for the Times, “Climate of Complete Certainty,” Stephens argued that we should doubt the certainty of climate science before we call for changes in public policy to address climate change. He said it is “not entirely” true that “the science is settled” and “the threat is clear.” In fact, climate science tells us with over 90-95% certainty that if we continue to emit CO2 at our current rate we will cause the planet to warm between 3-5.5 °C over the coming ninety years. Uncertainty in the modeling is already accounted for by the range of projected temperatures. Even 3°C warming would be catastrophic for human beings everywhere. 3°C warming would destroy agricultural systems that feed millions of people, incite fatal droughts and heat waves, and flood our costal cities, rendering them uninhabitable. It is only by taking immediate steps to decarbonize our global economy – even bigger steps than were outlined in the 2016 Paris Agreement – that we have any hope to hold warming at 2°C and preserve our current way of life. The world's most respected climate scientists have signed an open letter calling Stephens' work “inaccurate and misleading.” (You can read that letter here: https://www.climatefactsfirst.org) And indeed Stephens is spreading the disinformation campaign developed by Exxon and its lobbyists in the 1990's (a campaign first exposed, in a somewhat painful irony, by The New York Times itself). This campaign uses the tobacco-industry playbook of minimizing and distorting scientific research into the hazards of smoking to minimize and distort scientific discoveries about the dangers of burning fossil fuels. The connections between tobacco-industry and fossil-fuel-industry propaganda have been well documented, for example in Merchants of Doubt by Naomi Oreskes, Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University. By claiming that Bret Stephens' arguments fall safely within "a range of views" that reasonable people may debate, The New York Times is legitimating the dangerous lie that there is enough uncertainty in the climate science to make us question whether we need to phase out fossil fuel consumption. In seeming to provide its readers with different viewpoints about climate change, The New York Times is in fact reinforcing and amplifying one viewpoint: that of the fossil-fuel industry and the climate-deniers in the Trump administration who are spreading the fake news that we must debate the science before policymakers act. Legitimating fake news about climate is irresponsible and dangerous. Every one of us who signs this petition has a deeply personal reason for protesting the hiring of Stephens by The New York Times. I am lucky to have a seven-year-old boy who I and his father love more than anything in the world; we will fight tirelessly to leave him a planet on which he can live safely and, if he wishes, have children of his own to love with equal ferocity. We trust that the Editors of The New York Times have similar hopes for a livable future. We urge the Times to remember that only its commitment to the truth enables it to fulfill the public trust and maintain the broad readership that has made The New York Times America's paper of record. We call on The New York Times to rescind its offer to Bret Stephens and instead hire a columnist committed to advancing his political position without using lies to support his argument.

Ban on plastic disposable plates, cups, and cutlery; promote biodegradable alternatives
Everyday we make use of millions of disposable plastic plates, cups, spoons, forks, knife etc. that end up in trash after single use. Some examples of this are drinking water from a water dispenser in any one of the NHS Hospitals or buying soup from any high street food store / take away joint. We all use plastic products as they are economical, however we overlook the cost of recycling or disposing plastic and the ill effects of plastic on our natural resources such as soil, lakes, rivers, mountains, sea, animals, birds, marine life to name a few. Some hard-hitting facts about plastic: · Some of these compounds found in plastic have been found to alter hormones or have other potential human health effects.· 50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away; only 1 to 3% of all plastics used is recycled globally· Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times· We now use about 20 times more plastic than we did 50 years ago.· Plastic can take up 500 to 1000 years to decompose! There are several alternatives that are available easily today - example some Chinese / Japanese take away joints offer cutlery made of wood but they still use containers that have some plastic in it. Like we banned plastic bags from the stores, it is time for us now to ban other plastic products where we have alternate options. We need to force restaurants, large & small retailers and consumers to move away from plastic and switch to sustainable and environmental friendly options. France has done it, the ban comes into effect in 2020. So what are we waiting for? Please act before it is too late. Sign this petition and support the cause to save the environment and the future generations.

Petition to Masidi Manjun
International Support for Masidi & the Creation of a Malaysian Shark Sanctuary
Sharks generate more money alive than dead for local communities. Well designed, administered and enforced Marine Protected Areas have been scientifically demonstrated across the globe to benefit fish and marine ecosystems. While the fins from a dead shark may be worth US $100 to a local fisherman, through ecotourism, a living shark can support an entire island community and its surrounding ecology by bringing in over US $1.9 million over the course of its lifetime. Together with Shark Stewards, an organization dedicated to combatting the shark fin trade, we are collecting signatures from the online community to prove to governments and organizations that travelers have a tangible interest in seeing sharks alive. We hope to begin saving sharks in my parents home country of Malaysia, in the heart of the coral triangle. Ecotourism is a major economic product of Malaysia and has increased over 20% in 2015 alone. Surveys among dive tourists indicate they will pay more to dive with sharks and big fish. Without healthy sharks, sea turtles and reefs the dive business in Malaysia is likely to decline and local communities will suffer economic loss and ecological destruction. Saving sharks would not only help revitalize the ocean ecosystem but could open up an entire new industry of dive ecotourism. Shark Stewards have successfully combated the shark fin trade and implemented shark conservation policies including the ban of shark finning, and the regulation of the shark fin trade in the USA and the Pacific Rim. With your support and signature, we hope to support Masidi Manjun in his efforts of creating shark sanctuaries in Malaysia. Five shark facts: Sharks are a keystone species and are responsible for the health of ocean ecosystems. They eliminate the weak, the diseased and the dead, maintaining the ecological balance and the future health of the ocean. Every year, tens of millions of sharks are killed by humans. On average, sharks kill less than 10 people a year. Shark fins contain mercury and have nearly no nutritional value. Most shark meat is unpalatable. It is mostly eaten as a status symbol by the Chinese. Currently, shark ecotourism brings almost US$1 Billion worldwide, and is expected to grow twofold over the next twenty years. There are over 450 species of sharks, most cause no harm to humans. Saving sharks will help save the ocean and the future of ocean and human health. The ocean needs our top predators. Let's start at the top, by fighting to save them. #sharkshepherdsLearn more about the shoot here.

What is PATM? (People Are Allergic To Me) It is an condition, whoever has PATM causes people to have usually these following allergic reactions such as: • Sneezing • Coughing• Runny nose • Itchy nose • Headache • Nausea • Stomach pain • Sore throat • Rubbing their faces (Survey 2010) We have had 14 responses with 57% being male. The median age is 30 and average time participants have had PATM is 4 years. PATM is not isolated to one location as sufferers are from Americas, Asia, Europe and other countries. It appears PATM starts with Nose rubbing then progresses to sneezing, followed by coughing and finally comments. The most frequent reaction noticed is Coughing (although this could be due to it’s obvious nature). The second most frequent reactions are in equal weight; “rubbing nose, clearing throat & Sniffing”. Participants noted their own symptoms are primarily ‘itchy skin’ as frequent, followed by ‘itchy skin & scalp’. This indicates that TMAU might be still worth investigating and further tests of different nature still need to be tried out. 77% of participants believe dairy makes PATM worse, followed by 62% for Coffee and Alcohol. 83% believe probiotics don’t help. http://www.tiede.fi/keskustelu/35648/ketju/patm_people_are_allergic_to_me/sivu/2 Mention of PATM on a Finnish science forum. "I just received information from Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) Foundation by mail a couple of days ago. According to them, there are large numbers people with TMAU-like symptoms but a negative for TMAU test result. There are some of their stories in Jan/Feb issue of Foundation's news rewsletter. The stories mentions other people reactions such as coughs, sneese etc. The newsletter also metions that there is another sister disorder called Dimethylglycinuria (DMGu), testing only available in UK and the Netherlands at this time. They are working to bring it in the US. (They hope sometimes this year.) Another information, for TMAU, fishy smelling is only about 15% of reported cases."
