    Pressing for Freedom

Ripples and dominoes are the norm of each day all of it is closely interrelated; an event anywhere in the Philippines can have bad repercussions everywhere, our economies, our social structures, and every views and opinions we use to define ourselves. And that, is the reason why, in our interconnected world, information is more significant than gold and diamonds. We seek knowledge, insight, and, most importantly, some semblance of the facts about the issues we face every day. The press has been entrusted with the task of critiquing and stabilizing the administration and government. When a social evil lurks, or corrupt practices and injustice occur, the press is the first to speak out. Furthermore, we rely on the media to gather, prove, and share information that influences people's decisions. The people will be in the dark if the press is not allowed to do all of this. If even one of these rights and freedoms is taken away from the press, I believe the voiceless will be silenced. Worse, if the press is not allowed to do its job, those in power will be able to run the country as they please. As a result, citizens will be misinformed, rendering them powerless.   I can see how press freedom of expression is morally equivalent to dictatorship. When the government imposes press restrictions, it is evident that the government is attempting to conceal something. Only lies are hidden, not the truth. As a result, individuals will be duped into believing that the government is right all the time. As a result, the government will benefit absolute power once there is no organization to report the truth. Press freedom is critical to the smooth operation of democracy. People should be socially aware of what is happening on in the world. The ability to oppose the government is necessary; it keeps the administration on their toes and motivates them to do better for the nation. The media has a significant role to play in any type of government, democratic or totalitarian. The information they disseminate helps to shape public opinion. Conflict, guns, and weapons get to be a part of living when our law enforcers lose their way. As a result, I must make a commitment using the media to help others to get out of this rut. I should shine a light on the righteousness that Filipinos have demonstrated in the face of so much pain and misery, the tremendous ability of the poor to communicate what little they have, our nation's customs, damayan, pakikiramay, and bayanihan. Make no mistake about where the press needs to stand when something more like the "community pantry" is designed to appear bad or questionable in aspects of its intension. Undoubtedly, how else can we combat the forces of rage and hatred than by highlighting the ease with which we can do good.

Petition to Lana Del Rey Fans, General public, Music Fans

Lana, Please Release Chemtrails Digitally Before Vinyl Pressing!

Lana (and team), we really would not mind a digital release of Chemtrails Over The Country Club with the vinyl coming at a later date! We greatly appreciate the fact that we get them for our collections and that you care enough to ensure they are coming but I'm sure if a pre-order is given for it then we won't mind waiting for them with a digital release beforehand. While we don't want to rush your creative process, if the album is already done, we are simply too excited to wait that long just for the sake of having it on vinyl! Several artists release vinyl records of their albums months after the initial digital release, which we wait patiently for (even of your own past albums.) Of course, this is just a request, and whatever you and your team choose to do we will support your music regardless! Thank you for considering.

Our most pressing issue: CLIMATE CHANGE solutions

We understand that the single most important issue this election cycle and beyond - regardless of our awareness, political party, religion, nationality, or economic status - is climate change. We call on our local and national political and governing institutions to prioritize moving expediently and constructively in the direction of finding and implementing smart solutions to this potentially catastrophic issue. We implore all candidates and leaders to prioritize climate change solutions throughout this election cycle and beyond, and we pledge to vote for the candidates who seem most apt to tackle the problems of climate change.

Petition to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid, MEMBERS OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL

Urge the UN to protect translators and interpreters worldwide

The world cannot function without translators and interpreters: We help the public stay informed by interpreting for journalists; we keep everyone safe by translating terrorism chatter pulled from the airwaves; we assist with delivering humanitarian aid to those in need; we act as language bridges for armed forces; we ensure due process and justice in courts and tribunals; we facilitate truth and reconciliation proceedings; we keep peace negotiations going in various international forums. And we transcend conflict by translating culture to reach people everywhere. But we are at risk. Linguists working for the military are kidnapped, tortured and beheaded as traitors; prison camp translators are prosecuted as spies; court interpreters receive death threats; fixers are persecuted for doing their job; and literary translators are incarcerated for content. The simple practice of our profession makes thousands of us vulnerable to loss of life, limb and liberty. Currently, translators and interpreters are not specifically protected by international legislation. As a professional category, we fall through the cracks in the Geneva Conventions and, unlike journalists, we are not covered by a resolution. This must change. A UN Resolution would be a first step toward ensuring our protection under international law, and it would mandate member states to prosecute crimes perpetrated against us. Please sign this petition and let the UN know that the time to protect translators and interpreters is now!
