7 Sep 2023 —
Dear all, please feed into the council's consultation by Sept 17.
DID YOU KNOW
HARINGEY PLAN TO RESURFACE THE PARKLAND WALK?
What’s the agenda?
Residents are worried…. HERE’S WHY.
· Haringey DON’T SAY what kind of surface they plan to use – e.g., a hard non-porous surface could mean the walk becomes a speedy superhighway for cycles & scooters – not good for walkers, disabled people, prams, older folk. There could be a risk of flooding as water runs off the path. Tarmac/concrete will be bad for soil and nature.
· They DON’T SAY how much damage this work will cause to existing trees or vegetation as well as insects, bird, animal species. Over the decades the PW has lost many species of birds, hedgehogs and insects. This is a nature corridor for bats, birds and owls and needs to be left undisturbed as much as possible.
· Haringey DON’T HAVE GOOD FORM HERE. Remember in 2021 they chopped at least 150+ trees for bridge ‘inspections?’ The work was mismanaged and badly executed - a number of veteran trees were chopped by ‘mistake.’ This is a truly unique green space.
· This means MORE NOISY BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE AND MORE RAMPS. Accessibility is important - BUT at what cost? We are the most nature-depleted country in Europe, our wildlife species are crashing - any work risks URBANISING our nature reserve further.
A conservation team should be leading this project, not Parks and Highways, the Parkland Walk is A NATURE RESERVE, NOT A PARK OR A ROAD and should be treated sensitively.
How can we feedback meaningfully when they’re not saying what kind of surface they’re planning to use OR informing us of more details?
