After decades of concern and more than a few false starts, the traffic lights at Watchung Plaza are finally up and working. They’re here because this community refused to give up - neighbors signed, spoke up, and kept pressing until it couldn’t be ignored.

The push for change began with a dangerous intersection. But it truly took hold the day we witnessed a young girl and her mom struck here in the plaza. We rushed out to help, along with others, and though thankfully they survived, the fear and heartbreak of that moment made one thing clear: this was not an abstract problem. Real lives were at risk, and it could not keep happening. This petition was launched and this week, the lights finally went on, a long overdue step toward making Watchung Plaza safer for everyone.

Not long after the accident, the little girl and her mom came back to our shop at the time, with a drawing she made as a thank-you. We’ve kept it ever since. Today, we share it again, as a reminder of why this mattered, and as a thank you to everyone who stood up to make Montclair a little safer and to hopefully prevent anything like that from happening again.

A traffic light is a positive step, but it’s not the whole answer. Let’s take this moment as a reminder to drive a little slower, be a little more mindful, and keep doing the small, everyday things that make a community stronger and safer for everyone.

One light won’t fix everything, but it is a positive reminder that progress is possible when we don’t let go.
