Thanks for your continued support! As we just reached 10,000 signatures (woot! woot!), we wanted to take a moment to talk about the real cost of single-use plastic bags.
While plastic bags are convenient and appear inexpensive, plastic bags cost us a lot more than the price that retailers are currently paying to provide them. A typical plastic bag's price is about 1 cent on the market, yet its management and disposal can be 10-20 times more expensive. For example, in 2004, the City of San Francisco estimated that waste management expenses for a single plastic bag add up to 17 cents. Additionally, the total cost of litter collection and disposal in the US is estimated to be at least $11.5 billion annually (20% of which is paid with taxpayers’ money).
By spreading the word about the real cost of single-use plastic bags, we have the power to shift our society's behaviors. And with enough people on board, our voices will be impossible to silence!
