Dec 21, 2016 — We hope you are all having a good end to finals and/or a relaxing start to your winter break. There are a few updates that supporters of this petition should be aware of - as we said before, our fight is far from over.
In regards to the ongoing African 405 controversy, the Young Americans for Freedom were the whistleblowers who took to their official social media on December 15 to complain about the class before ANY news outlet picked up the story. Not only have they put our university in a dangerous position in terms of funding for the next biennial, Y.A.F. has also brought blatant racism out of the woodwork and energized the alt-right both on and off campus with the release of this story and the subsequent need for the University of Wisconsin to put out a statement.
In addition, College Republicans, a partisan organization, has condemned this petition, called it libel and called on the University to denounce it in a statement they released on December 19. There is substantiated proof of every incident that has been mentioned, whether it be screenshots, CCTV footage, recorded video, or newspaper articles. College Republicans' failure to look at the facts is dangerous and unwise, and their unwavering support for the unprotected hate speech and fighting words of Y.A.F. - both of which are not protected under the First Amendment - is concerning.
Please continue to share this petition; it desperately needs to garner more support after the events of the last two days. We have also added a link to the Hate and Bias report form as a resource for those who may have been directly affected by the events of the last two days or have had negative interactions with members of Y.A.F.
To all of you: please do not forget that self-care is important, and have a safe and relaxing winter break!
