Hannah and I been quiet for a while, but this doesn't mean that the needs of vulnerable asylum seeking children across Europe have gone away.
If anything, recent events have seen many children (and men and women) become even more endangered. We were shocked and saddened to hear that a woman and two children sadly lost their lives in a fatal fire in Moria camp on Lesvos island this weekend - a camp that is well over four times capacity.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this horrific event: the friends and families of the victims, and also the people who have now been further displaced, due to the destruction in the camp. We need to offer safe passage now more than ever.
Today I watched a speech by Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, vowing to end free movement for all people after Brexit. She spoke of "taking back control" and promised to no longer "surrender" our borders - language that deliberately creates an 'us' and 'them', and which suggests that our country is under attack from migrants.
I fear that our policies are becoming more and more intolerant towards our fellow human beings, and are continuing to lose sight of basic decency and compassion.
We need to demonstrate that this is not what everyone in the UK stands for - please help us by continuing to sign and share the petition as widely as you can. Thank you!!
