Yugoslavia did not have politicians and elites intelligent or skilled enough to negotiate the dissolution of their country. The Serbians, just like Nigeria’s Fulani, believed themselves to be destined to rule for ever. Consequently, Yugoslavia dissolved in acrimony, chaos and wars, and Serbia has ended up as the poorest of all the emerging nations.

Czechoslovakia had intelligent and skilled politicians and elites who saw that a united country disadvantaged their people. So, they sat down and negotiated independence for their ethnic nations of Slovakia and Czechia. Both countries today are thriving more than the united country would ever have been. 

Nigeria is not working, has never worked since its formation by the British in 1914. Nigeria disadvantages all the peoples including the Fulani who believe that they are destined to rule for ever. Unfortunately for our ethnic nations, Nigeria does not have the calibre of politicians, elites, and traditional rulers capable of thinking beyond their own immediate advantages and comfort. We, the people may have to do this breakup without them.

What we need to figure out, and figure out quickly, is the path to take.
