The Yoruba want Emancipation Proclamation Now!

As a matter of law, independence for Nigeria was a negotiated agreement between 3 tribes - Hausa Yoruba and Igbo. That agreement was intended for eternity. Only those 3 tribes therefore are entitled to renegotiate the agreement if they so wish. Further, that agreement falls if one or more of the tribal parties withdrew from it. Federal, regional, and state governments, then and now, were not parties to that pre-independence agreement and therefore have no legal standing to alter its terms. The military that intermittently usurped power also was not party to that agreement and have no legal standing to alter its terms.
As a matter of law, the pre-independence agreement between the three tribes – Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba – was specifically for a three-region, tribe-based structure. The creation of more states was neither envisioned nor accommodated in that agreement. Indeed, the idea of multiple regions was actively discussed and rebuffed during the negotiations. This makes all states created by the military during their tenure of illegal seizure of power null and void. The military that created the states were not party to the pre-independence agreement and had no legal standing to alter it. The demand by the Igbo and Yoruba for either a return to that pre-independence agreement or for their self-determination is thus founded on solid legal grounds.
As a matter of law, the Westminster style government was the system of government for Nigeria agreed by the three tribes – Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba - that negotiated independence for Nigeria. No other system of government was contemplated or envisioned in the agreement. This renders illegal all other systems of government that have been introduced by the military since 1966. The military that created these alternative systems of government were usurpers and not party to the pre-independence agreement. Nigeria’s current government which was handed the levers of power from the military is also illegitimate. All citizens of Nigeria are entitled to disobey and to resist this illegitimate government by any means at their disposal. The Yoruba to this end have chosen self-determination, like the Jews chose Israel.
The Yoruba people through recent mega rallies have spoken with one collective voice and as one people. The Yoruba make one universal demand. The collective voice, the demand, of the Yoruba today is: konikaluku lo sile baba re; meaning ‘let each return to his fatherland’; the Yoruba want to have their own nation, like the Jews had their Israel. They want Yoruba Nation not the rebirth of Nigeria. The Fulani committing genocide, particularly through their herdsmen, is the only matter of relevance to the Yoruba people right now. Constitutional reform is irrelevant. Restructuring is irrelevant. Buhari ineptitude is irrelevant. Yoruba life has meant absolutely nothing to the Fulani. The Fulani kill, kill, and kill again without remorse, without compassion, without thought for the pain and suffering they cause. Why should we tolerate those who murder us, the Yoruba ask? Time to leave Nigeria, the Yoruba say. The Yoruba say a homeland for them, like it was done for the Jews of Israel, is the only answer to Fulani committing genocide.
The Yoruba say it is time to bring the Nigeria mess to an end. Nigeria will break up into constituent nations in the next few months, they say. The means of achieving this break up is the conundrum. There is one of three potential possibilities: 1. Negotiation, 2. Proclamation, and 3. Civil war. Northerners believing that they can win the civil war are deluded. Emancipation Negotiation would concern territorial boundaries, division of assets and labilities, and future relations. A broker would be needed - #UK, #US, #UN, #AU are qualified, but negotiation is not at all possible in the current climate of Fulani and Buhari atrocities. Emancipation Proclamation would only concern a date for the announcement. It reflects what is already happening on the ground. Yoruba, Igbo and Middlebelt are actively pursuing self-determination as guaranteed to them by #UN and #AU Charters, international law, and Nigeria domestic law. In true democracies, events trigger political actions. Judging from the mega rallies, what the Yoruba want, and should get, is emancipation proclamation.
