Historic England online heritage debate on interim protection

HE have now published their latest online heritage debate on interim protection, which can be seen using the link below.

In my article I continue to argue that building preservation notices are not sufficient. Despite HE's new guidance, I consider it unlikely that cash strapped local authorities will begin to routinely serve BPN's - which in any case do not apply to archaeological sites.

HE's summary seems to indicate a reluctance to press for new legislation, but I find the reasons given for this to be unconvincing. I would encourage everyone who has signed the petition to read and comment on the articles. It is clear that change will not happen without public pressure, and until the law is changed there is continued unnecessary risk to our built heritage. It's only a matter of time before another outrage like Small Street or Firestone happens, and HE's new guidance, while welcome, would not have prevented these.
