Late last night, I considered ditching school today. This is astoundingly uncharacteristic of me, but I was afraid of attending classes devoted to addressing Naperville North's suicide epidemic and being unable to hold my tongue. I knew what to say, but I knew just as well that no one would want to hear it. Or so I thought...
I am astounded at all the positive responses my essay has received. Close friends, respected adults, distant peers, and even complete strangers have expressed their support for this petition. A student from a different high school has asked for my permission to cite it in a report. The Naperville North Student Government has asked me to present it at a meeting with the entire faculty. Thank you to every individual who has signed my petition and spread the word. Seeing the signatures rise in numbers has made me feel so much less alone in my struggles. My intention was to be a voice for the students of Naperville North, and though I know I cannot represent everyone's experience, I am glad that I have made I dent. Today we made a difference. Tomorrow, let's make a change.
