Greetings Esteemed and Distinguished Co-Signatories and Partners in African Dignity Worldwide! https://www.change.org/p/the-members-of-the-university-of-ghana-council-gandhi-s-statue-at-the-university-of-ghana-must-come-down Our righteous petition has been delivered to the University of Ghana's Registrar by Dr. Appiagyei-Atua (UG-Law) and we hope that it will be considered by the University Council as stated by the Director of the University of Ghana Public Affairs Directorate Mrs. Stella Amoa in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s73MTguvf2A. As you may be aware, dozens of major media outlets from throughout Ghana and the world have picked up the story of our (meaning you included) collective work and how it is intimately tied to other related global initiatives towards African/Black dignity, self-respect, self-love and self-determination. This is much more than an issue about a statue! One teaches others how one should be treated. Right now, African/Black people will teach the world that we are either to be respected or that we will be the willing footstools and doormats of those who referred to us "half-heathen," "one degree removed from animals," "kaffirs," and "savages" while fighting wars against freedom-loving African people, laying the foundation for institutionalised apartheid and disenfranchising the Dalits (The Black "Untouchables" of India) for starters. In response to our just call, we now have over 1500+ signatures from throughout Africa, the Global African World and beyond!!! This is what some of you had to say in addition to signing: "We should honor our heroes and heroines!" Prof Emeritus Jacob U'Mofe Gordon, Gainesville, FL (Immediate Past Endowed Kwame Nkrumah Chair of African Studies at UG-IAS) "Sam Aboah's statue is what must be at the site. He paid for the garden." Prof Kweku Osam, Legon, Ghana (Professor of Linguistics and Immediate Past Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana) "I am in solidarity with the petitioners who have compelling reasons for bringing down the statue of Gandhi at the University of Ghana." Prof Seth N. Asumah, Cortland, NY (SUNY-Distinguished Teaching Professor and Past Carnegie Diaspora Fellow at UG-IAS) "I am signing this because doing what is honorable is a contribution to reclaiming our dignity as a people." Prof Audrey Gadzekpo, Legon, Accra (UG - Professor of Communications) "Black Africans have to be prudent and realize that every gift must be thoroughly inspected lest we drag a Trojan horse into our lives. Given Gandhi's contempt for the Black race, keeping his statue would be the intellectual equivalent of parking in our living room a barrel of gift-wrapped nuclear toxic waste." [Dr.] Chinweizu [Ibekwe], Lagos, Nigeria (Independent Scholar) To read more supporter comments kindly visit: https://www.change.org/p/the-members-of-the-university-of-ghana-council-gandhi-s-statue-at-the-university-of-ghana-must-come-down/c We have also been corresponding actively and in solidarity with luminary scholars of Indian descent including Arundhati Roy, G.B. Singh and Drs. Ashwin Desai and Goolam Vahed who have been at the forefront of tearing away the mask of divinity of the patron "saint of the status quo" to quote Roy: Desai, Ashwin and Vahed, Goolam, 2015. The South African Gandhi: Stretcher-bearer of Empire. Redwood City, CA: Stanford University Press. "This is an incredible campaign. You have my full support. […] Let's work out other forms of solidarity.[…] It seems to me that this campaign is also about new forms of colonialisms dressed up as anti-imperialism if the behaviour of Indian businesses in Ethiopia is anything to go by. Much love" - Ashwin Desai Roy, Arundhati, 2014. The doctor and the saint. Annihilation of caste: The annotated critical edition. New Delhi: Navayana. "What you are doing is so very important. This has been a long time coming." - Arundhati Roy Singh, G.B., 2004. Gandhi: Behind the Mask of Divinity. Amherst, New York: Prometheus Books. "I salute you, the faculty and so many people of Ghana for standing up to this insult at black people by way of racist Gandhi statue. […] Ever since my first book (Gandhi: Behind the Mask of Divinity) was published in 2004, the movement to stop these statues of Gandhi has picked up (see www.gandhism.org) and so has the change of tactics employed by Indian Govt. to sneak in the Gandhi statues. What happened at your university campus is the latest phase of sneaking in.  We have a historic opportunity to dismantle Gandhi statues; let University of Ghana be the first. " - Colonel G.B. Singh We have also been in correspondence with Bhajan Singh and Pieter Friedrich of the most informative http://www.gandhism.org "Our efforts are […] very much needed and very relevant as not much is discussed about Gandhi's segregation success at the Durban post office where a third door was installed as Gandhi said  “Lavatories are marked ‘natives and Asiatics’ at the railway stations. In the Durban Post and Telegraph Offices, there were separate entrances for natives and Asiatics and Europeans. We felt the indignity too much and many respectable Indians were insulted and called all sorts of names by the clerks at the counter.” What was the impact of such efforts on apartheid that followed?
