It's been a long fight for justice, that has seen ugly politics trample human rights in #Bermuda. We have witnessed religious interference where essentially one religious group has imposed its will over "some" politicians. The politicians rewarded their base and voted to discriminate against a minority. It is good to see that OUTBermuda "Carpe Diem".... Carpe diem is a Latin aphorism, usually translated "seize the day". When I started the petition in 2015, it was shocking to me in how the politicians behaved. The OBA leadership essentially wished I would "GO AWAY". Indeed I was told that SSM was NOT on the One Bermuda Alliance "Agenda". "We have to win the next election - what would you rather have Tony, the PLP back in power or gays holding hands on front street"? To say that I was furious was an understatement. The town hall meetings held by the OBA to gauge the public sentiment led to Michael Dunkley coming up with the weakest of political solutions to "The Problem". The OBA held a "Non-Binding Referendum" that asked 2 questions..... 1. Do you agree with Same-sex marriage? 2. Do you agree with civil unions? This pathetic non-binding referendum FAILED. Then the naysayers latched onto the results of this failed referendum by claiming 68% of Bermudians voted against Same-sex marriage. The LIE was repeated again and again and again by some OBA politicians and indeed 100% of the PLP. Only 14,000 out of 44,000 registered voters said NO. 53% stayed home. The PLP trumped "The Donald" with their repeated misuse of numbers, even arguing in court that the majority of Bermudians were against SSM.... When Mark Pettingill represented Winston Godwin-DeRoche, and his partner Greg, against the Registrar General over the denial of a marriage license, he was joined by Human Rights Bermuda who were represented by Rod Attride-Stirling. The resulting judgement by Supreme Court Justice Charles-Etta Simmons resulted in victory for same-sex couples and Marriage Equality became legal in Bermuda on May 5th 2017. The OBA accepted the ruling and decided NOT to appeal. Along comes the election of July 2017 and the PLP promised, as part of the election mandate, that IF elected they would repeal Same-sex marriage by legislation. Preserve Marriage lobbied hard. Some preachers in churches wailed about the evils of homosexuality and gay marriage. Foreign "Hate Consultants" were brought into Bermuda including The National Organization for Marriage. A minority was essentially demonized. Bermuda became the 1st country on planet earth to reverse Marriage Equality with what I call "Legislation of Discrimination". It was ugly and evil. That a government would legislate against a minority must surely be "Repugnant to the Bermuda Constitution"? Once again, folks were left with NO alternative but to challenge Domestic Partnerships in the Supreme Court of Bermuda. Once again the "Dream Team" of lawyers Mark Pettingill and Rod Attride-Stirling argued brilliantly in front of Bermuda's soon to be retired chief justice Ian Kawaley. The decision of Ian Kawaley will impact the rights of the #LGBTQ community in Bermuda. Indeed his legal ruling will be used in other future legal challenges far beyond Bermudas shores. It is my hope that Roderick Ferguson and Maryellen C L Jackson 's lawyers have proved their case and that justice and equality win the day. Some may not have liked my "Style" but lets just say this, "If we didn't kick some stones and left equality solely to winning hearts and minds, we would never have reached this point". I can now quietly bow out as I am thrilled that OUTBermuda took the gloves off in the fight for the #LGBTQ community, whilst also providing support within the community.
