Hi All,
So, the BBC are to conduct an investigation. They have gently shifted the terms of the investigation and, as such, will not directly answer the questions I put to them in my last correspondence. It does seem like they are going to cover the main points. Though that remains to be seen.
Findings are to be published by the 14th November and I then have ten working days to feedback on these.

Dear Mr McFadden
Thank you for your email of 15 October regarding a report by the BBC’s Political Editor, Nick Robinson, which was broadcast on both the BBC News at Six and the BBC News at Ten (with some minor alterations). The Editorial Complaints Unit has received a number of similar complaints about this report and so our intention is to conduct an investigation into the main points which have been raised and send a single response to all complainants. This is in line with the BBC’s published policy for handling complaints and will enable us to provide a response to all those who have complained in a timely and cost-effective manner.
I should explain the remit of the Editorial Complaints Unit is to investigate cases where there may have been a serious breach of the standards expressed in the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines (http://www.bbc.co.uk/guidelines/editorialguidelines/). In summary, we will consider whether the two reports by Mr Robinson met the BBC’s standards for due accuracy and due impartiality. In particular we will consider the following complaints:
- It was inaccurate and misleading to include part of a question posed by Mr Robinson at a news conference and then say of Mr Salmond “He didn’t answer”.
- The inaccurate claim by Mr Robinson demonstrated bias against Mr Salmond.
- The report as a whole was biased against Mr Salmond and failed to meet the
requirements for due impartiality.
We will aim to let you know the outcome of our investigation by 14 November. I should explain that when we have completed our investigation we will issue a provisional finding in the first instance and give complainants ten working days in which to let us have theircomments before our decision is finalised.
Yours sincerely
Colin Tregear
Complaints Director
