Hello everyone! The Voting Reform Team is evolving. We want you to help us choose a new name for our group and shape our campaign! Since the most disproportionate election in British history this May, over half a million people signed petitions for Proportional Representation - with over 235,000 of those signatures coming from this one. Me and other activists from VRT have worked since then to create a democratically organised campaign group to continue pushing for voting reform. We want to be as collaborative and inclusive as possible because it is clear to us that we need to work together if we are to succeed in getting proportional representation in the House of Commons. We have already had campaign successes, including our Declaration for Voting Reform being signed by hundreds of people, public figures and organisations like the Green Party, the Peter Tatchell Foundation, and Frankie Boyle; a demonstration at the Suffragette film premiere that appeared in the Independent; linking up and supporting local groups; and a constituent letter-writing campaign in which members of the VRT have already pinned down over 120 MP’s positions on voting reform, which are being added to an interactive map as they come in. Perhaps above all, we organised the Great Gathering in July and brought together most of the pro-reform groups and parties to hold a demonstration for system change - the first time this has happened since the AV referendum campaign in 2011. We are determined to see concrete steps taken towards introducing a more proportional system before the next General Election. If we are going to win equal votes, the movement will have to get bigger, louder and more visible. We have some great ideas about how to create opportunities for all of us to help shape this movement - watch out for some exciting updates over the coming months! As a first step, we are thinking of changing our campaign name from Voting Reform to something more inspiring - and we would like your input to make sure we choose a good one! Please select your favourite name/s (you can vote for more than one). If you think you have a better name for the campaign you can add your own suggestion for others to vote on too. The poll will help us build a shortlist of options for everyone to have a final say on. https://www.facebook.com/groups/votingreformteam/permalink/1042948822422373/?qa_ref=qd If you would like some other practical and easy ways to help in the meantime, here are a few things that you could do right now: Write to your MP to tell them you want proportional representation! Send their responses to votingreformteam@gmail.com for inclusion in our interactive map (coming soon!). Organise or join a trip to see Suffragette - still in the cinema this week - and talk about what you want to do to help make our voting system fairer. Invite your friends to join this Facebook group. Our broken electoral system underlies so much that is broken in our society as a whole. Whatever political cause a person is passionate about, the chances are a more representative government would help. Like our page Voting Reform Now and invite others to do so too: www.facebook.com/VotingReformNow Together, we will get a more equal voting system. The time is now! Owen
