On July 27th, the Bastrop Commissioners Court in a 4-0 decision (one commissioner abstained from voting - Mark Meuth) unanimously approved the remove of the Confederate monuments from the Bastrop County Courthouse grounds.
This accomplishment absolutely would not have been possible without the work and efforts of the other members of the Bastrop 5: Cheryl Reese (Who By the way is running for Commissioner in Precinct 4 in the Elgin Area) Madeline Eden (Who is running for Texas House District 17), Aimee Cook, Deena Eden, and Dock Jackson.
I want to personally thank all of you who followed the story, spread our message, signed the petition, provided support and encouragement, stood with us, made phone calls, wrote letters, and sent emails.
We also want to thank Judge Pape and the commissioners of the court for their willingness to have the discussions with open hearts and open minds so that we could reach this truly historic moment for our County. We have all collectively set the model for other counties to move forward in their efforts by showing how citizens coming together for a cause can make a difference.
I have been working as a Co-Chair on the Committee to relocate the monuments to a new home within the county and we are accepting monetary donations to help us in our efforts.
The relocation effort has two goals: (1) help Bastrop County promote an environment of racial equality and (2) ensure that the history these two monuments represent is preserved.
We need your help to relocate the confederate monuments from the Bastrop County Courthouse lawn. We have two viable options within Bastrop County and we are currently working out logistics and drafting cost for removal. Your gift in any amount will help move the Obelisk and the Sayers memorial to an appropriate new location within the county.
Our hope is to have the monuments removed by the end of 2021.Because of the age and size of the monuments, relocating them is not a small task. Engineers and experienced contractors are required to ensure a successful move. We are committed to raising the funds from private sources; taxpayer money will not be used.
Please click on the link below and contribute whatever you can to our efforts, and share the link across your social media platforms to spread the word. The petition will remain open in an effort to help us reach our fundraising goal.
