SB 180 has passed Senate and is being transmitted to the House. Now more than ever we need you to reach out to your State Representative. There is only a few days left of the legislative session.

Contact your House of Representative and their Interns!

The best way to have your voice "heard" on this issue is to call your House Representative's INTERN and tell them how you want your representative to vote. Send an email to the Rep + Intern, then call the Intern and reference your email. Keep it short and to the point.

A few concerns about Massage Assistants in this bill are:

  • Certified Massage Assistants would only have 150 hoursrequired education – a mere 15-25% of the current MINIMUM standard of 600 hours traditional schooling or 1000 hours Apprenticeship.
  • Modify exam requirements for Licensed Massage Therapy in Utah in order to establish not one, but TWO lower tiers of people allowed to do Massage Therapy.
  • Massage Assistant In Training (MAITs) have 6 months to complete their 150 hours of education – but may be able to work hands-on with the public before those hours are complete depending upon curriculum approval (tbd by Division rule).
  • Both these lower tiers are granted a “limited scope of practice” which in actuality is virtually and functionally identical to that of the eminently more qualified Licensed Massage Therapists.
  • INCREASE the number of those being supervised (Apprentices, CMAs, and MAITs) from 2 to 6 persons per Supervisor
  • Change the requirements for Supervision of CMAs from direct to INDIRECT
  • Extend the scope of those able to now INDIRECTLY supervise up to 6 “certified massage assistants” to several other groups of professionals all of whom have little to no training whatsoever in Massage Therapy.

Help the Licensed Massage Therapist's kepp the Community SAFE by reaching out and tell your representatives Intern how you want the Representative to vote NO ON SB180!
