Thank You — More Than 1,600 Voices Strong!

Hello Everyone,

I want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who has signed, shared, and supported the petition requesting legislative action to dissolve the City of Mableton.

Because of you, we have surpassed 1,600 signatures. Every signature has helped demonstrate that there are residents who want our elected officials to hear our concerns about the future of Mableton.

Your Signatures At Work

I have used the support demonstrated through this petition to formally reach out to elected officials and members of the media.  (See the actual communication below.)

The outreach has included:

• Georgia State Representative Terry Cummings, who represents a significant portion of Mableton
• Georgia State Representative David Wilkerson, who represents a portion of the Mableton area
• U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, for awareness of the concerns being raised by Georgia constituents
• U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, for awareness of the concerns being raised by Georgia constituents
• Local and Atlanta-area news organizations, in an effort to bring greater public attention to the petition and the concerns being expressed by Mableton residents
   

What's Next?

This is not the end of the petition—it is the next phase of the effort.

I plan to keep the petition active while we await responses from elected officials and continue building support. I will also use this page to share meaningful updates regarding legislative responses, media interest, and other developments.

Our goal remains to ensure that residents' concerns about additional taxation, duplication of government services, administrative costs, and the future of our local government receive serious consideration.

Dear Representative Terry Cummings:

My name is Kimberly Houston, and I am a resident of the City of Mableton and the organizer of a resident-led petition requesting the dissolution of the City of Mableton.

I am writing to respectfully ask for your attention and leadership on an issue that is increasingly important to residents of the community you represent. More than 1,600 people have signed the petition calling for legislative action regarding Mableton's future. We believe this level of engagement deserves serious consideration by our representatives in the Georgia General Assembly.

There are longstanding concerns among Mableton residents regarding the incorporation process itself. Some residents have questioned whether the ballot language clearly communicated the significance and consequences of incorporation. Others have raised concerns about maps circulated before the referendum and whether residents in certain areas understood that their properties would be included within the boundaries of the new city. These concerns continue to contribute to a belief among some residents that they did not have sufficient information to make a fully informed decision about cityhood.

Residents were also told that Mableton would operate under a limited "City Lite" model, providing three primary services: code enforcement, planning and zoning, and waste management. Since incorporation, however, the scope and cost of city government have expanded significantly.

Residents now have concerns about the City's evolving scope, new and additional tax obligations, increasing administrative costs, and the duplication of services already provided by Cobb County. We believe these concerns, collectively, provide a compelling reason for the Georgia General Assembly to review Mableton's current governmental structure and provide residents with a lawful path to reconsider the City's future.

For these reasons, I respectfully ask you to consider introducing or supporting legislation that would establish a lawful process for dissolving the City of Mableton and returning appropriate governmental responsibilities to Cobb County.

I also respectfully request an opportunity for concerned residents to meet with you to discuss these concerns, understand the legislative process for municipal dissolution, and determine what steps can be taken during the upcoming legislative session. We would welcome the opportunity to present the petition and hear directly from you regarding the options available to Mableton residents.

More than 1,600 signatures represent more than a number. They represent people asking their elected representatives to listen, evaluate the current structure of government, and determine whether there should be a legislative path for residents to reconsider Mableton's future.
