WATCH NOW: At this weekend's protest at the 23rd St Virginia Beach Sunsations store, we captured live footage of broken hermit crab limbs in the barren, cramped cages these wild animals are forced to live in. Sensitive, delicate hermit crabs drop limbs when they are ailing or severely stressed. Share the footage and then give Sunsations' corporate office a call at 757-422-5739 (option 1, then option 0) to tell it to stop this cruel trade!
More than 50,000 of you have now signed our petition urging the beach chain to end the sale of wild hermit crabs as trinkets. Yet Sunsations defends its "humane" treatment of these animals and continues to sell them by the thousands. During our protest this weekend, we witnessed broken limbs, as well as workers taking crabs out of the cages and putting them on the floor right at the entrance--where a customer could easily step on them--to make them "race."
Delicate hermit crabs are nothing more than disposable trinkets to Sunsations.
After watching the footage, please give Sunsations' corporate office a call TODAY at 757-422-5739 (option 1, then option 0) using our sample script below or your own polite message:
SAMPLE SCRIPT: Hi, my name is ____ and I'm calling as a concerned consumer to urge you to end the sale of hermit crabs. Visitors to your stores have found crabs in crowded, barren cages with broken limbs - a sign of severe stress. This weekend, workers were even witnessed putting these delicate animals on the floor to force them to race. Hermit crabs are delicate wild animals who are ripped from the seashore to be sold in tiny cages, where they will perish in months instead of their 30-year lifespan. I will not shop at Sunsations until you stop selling these wild animals. Thank you.
After your call, email us at contact@plightofthehermies.org to let us know how it went! Thank you for speaking up for these intelligent, complex animals!
