The Boeing Company’s field guides seem perfect for nature-lovers hiking through nearly three thousand acres of open space near Los Angeles. The problem? The guides make no mention that the Santa Susana Field Lab is a toxic California "Superfund" site, the location of one of America’s worst nuclear meltdowns, and is still dangerously polluted today.

It's a textbook example of "greenwashing," where companies profit from making something seem environmentally friendly when it's not. In this case, Boeing could profit a billion dollars.

The Santa Susana Field Lab needs extensive remediation from decades of secret nuclear experimentation and tens of thousands of rocket engine tests. The site’s soil and groundwater are heavily polluted with long-lasting chemicals, now federally banned pesticides, toxic metals, and radioactive waste.

Originally, Boeing agreed to clean up the Santa Susana Field Lab so that it was safe enough that people could hypothetically live onsite and eat from their backyard garden and not get cancer from it. It would have set a new precedent for companies to clean up their toxic sites, prioritizing public health and the environment over profit.

But Boeing backed out. They rescinded their promises and renegotiated their cleanup agreements. Boeing is now be allowed to implement the weakest cleanup. It would leave the Santa Susana Field Lab so toxic that hikers would have to monitor how many hours they are on the site; otherwise, they could get cancer from it.

Boeing hired PR firms to publish glossy field guides and inspirational commercials to hide their heinous deeds from the public. There are yearly Naturalist Trainings and Earth Day Hikes onsite. They're using greenwashing to the fullest extent to make people think the site is safe and to avoid paying to clean it up completely.

Boeing’s greenwashing of the Santa Susana Field Lab will likely work. That’s why companies do it. It works. Except when people rally together and stop it. It's up to us. Will you help?
