Today is my birthday and I’m asking people to make a donation to support this petition and keep it relevant. You can donate in honour of a loved one or a beloved pet or to honour the many sled dogs who have perished in long-distance sled dog races. Every donation serves to create awareness and move us closer to ending this barbaric event. My dream is to see all long-distance sled dog racing permanently banned.
YQ 2019: Another year - another Yukon Quest - another dead dog. The story keeps repeating. Every year another sled dog is run to death in this cruel race. Last year Boppy the Sled Dog choked to death on his own vomit in -55 below. This year a five-year-old sled dog named Joker died the same way. Dogs that aren’t culled after the race go back to life on the end of a chain as SANDY SILVER continues to ignore 70,000 people who petition him to STOP FUNDING THIS DEATH RACE.
I am aware that many have written to the Yukon Premier Sandy Silver asking him to cease all funding and support for the Yukon Quest. The question is – has anyone ever received a reply? I know I haven’t and I’ve written a few times. – It takes a special kind of arrogance to ignore 70,000 people!
The mushers claim they love their dogs and ‘treat them like family’ but anyone who truly loves their dog would never deliberately put it in harm’s way. It’s asking too much of any animal to expect it to endure a thousand-mile race in arctic conditions. Most of the dogs in these races are not even authentic northern breeds. The mushers exploit the very animals they claim to love in order to serve an over-inflated ego.
The exploitation and abuse of sled dogs was never a northern tradition! Many times over the past few years I have spoken publicly about the plight of the northern sled dogs and the one thing I hear the most is: “I had no idea!” Most people don’t. Please continue to share this article and help to expose the ugly truth behind 1,000-mile sled dog racing. The Truth About Sled Dog Racing
IN MEMORIAM R.I.P. In memory of Joker the Sled Dog and his many canine brothers & sisters who continue to suffer and die in the cruel Yukon Quest including: Boppy. Firefly. Polar. Hope. Jewel. Melville. General. Bags. Geronimo. Taco. - and the many unnamed others who have paid with their lives including those who died from their injuries after the race, those that were unrecorded, and the countless others who were culled. My heart cries for you.
Keep opening eyes and ears and hearts. With knowledge comes change. Let’s end this horror show and make this a more humane world so we never have to lose another precious sled dog!
*My new book “it’s howlin’ time!” featuring a section about the plight of the northern sled dogs is now available in paperback on Amazon. it's howlin' time!
