Because of our campaign, anti-trans lobbyist Kellie-Jay Keen has not received a visa to enter Australia!
This is a huge victory for our community. Congratulations to everyone who signed and shared our petition, emailed the Minister, and called their MP.
Because of your actions, Kellie-Jay Keen will not be getting a second opportunity to spread her hateful rhetoric in Australia.
This victory shows that when we work together we are unstoppable.
If you want to keep supporting our work you can:
- Stay in touch by signing up on our website
- Share our victory post on Instagram and Facebook to help us spread the good news.
- Help us to keep up the fight by chipping in or becoming a monthly donor today.
Today, we celebrate a victory that has been more than a year in the making and involved the work of many people:
- In March 2023, Kellie-Jay Keen’s tour was met with massive counter-protests organised by a number of different groups that drowned out and shut down her events all over the continent.
- In May 2023 we worked together with the Victorian Pride Lobby on a major survey to capture people’s experiences of anti-trans hate. Our findings, published in the Fuelling Hate report, showed that our community experienced a spike in instances of anti-trans hate during the two-month period that directly coincided with Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull's tour, specifically experiences of vilification, abuse, and harassment.
- In August 2023 we supported people all over the country to deliver copies of the Fuelling Hate report to their local MPs, reaching more than 88 politicians across the country, urging them to act to protect our communities from violence, vilification, and abuse.
- Two weeks ago Lucy From Naarm broke the news that Kellie-Jay Keen was attending CPAC. We put up a petition, emailed the government, reached out to MP's, and worked together with Equality Australia to contact allies.
- Then finally, we spent the last week urging people to sign and share the petition, email and call the Minister, and reach out to their own MPs so that this issue stayed on the agenda.
All that work has now paid off, and today Kellie-Jay Keen has not been granted a visa to enter Australia.
Keen’s 2023 tour was deeply traumatising for many in our community.
A number of people reported being afraid to leave the house after the scenes on the steps of Victorian parliament, others experienced waves of harassment online, and there was a significant increase in the number of people accessing support helplines.
That’s why this win matters so much. It’s not just about stopping Keen's speech at a conservative conference. It’s about fighting for the freedom to be ourselves and for the right to feel safe in our communities.
Congratulations to everyone who helped achieve this outcome.
In solidarity for trans justice,
